Nina Simone
Nick Drake
Terry Callier
Beth Orton
Bobby Womack
and lately, the swoonsome tones of Yukimi Nagano, she just gets better and better - ave eeet! :

+1 for Beth Orton

I'll throw emiliana torrini in the mix too.

Hang on, we've got a winner - Carla Bruni

Ray lamontagne.

I also like it when Radio 4 has Lord Viscout Kennilworth of Wutheringshire or similar on for that ultra poshness that doesn't exist in the real world.

Wwaswas,
She did a version of The Most Beguiling Eyes for a cover CD for HiFi Choice mag back in the 80's.
It's heartbreaking.

Can't find it on the web, will have to post it myself if I can find the CD.

lauren laverne could talk the spooge out of me at a fatal rate.
singing-wise, +1 on the Kate Rusby. a few years ago i had the unsettling experience of being on a 1st date with a young lady who forced her way to the front and bellowed (repeatedly) her love for miss Rusby. I approved this act, and joined in, 'cause you never know..

edit: Dave Vanian for boy voice

Difficult to choose, really. Blokes, speaking, then Leonard Cohen, Samuel L Jackson, Tom Waits and James Earl Jones, singing, Jeff Buckley, John Grant, Mark Lanegan, Mike Patton.
Women, a little more difficult as I have a particular fondness for the female singing voice, but speaking, then Lauren Lavern, Katie Puckrick, Mariella Frostrupp off the top of my head, and singing, Sandy Denny, Emmylou Harris, Karen Carpenter, Laura Marling, Dusty Springfield.

I prefer his voice now. He was too screechy back then.
