I'm the stig and so's my wife.
'Stig' is just a pro driver, the identity is kept 'secret' in case the driver has races on when filming takes place, and they can easily use another one. Or if the driver is injured or killed. Also, it's a lot cheaper as the driver won't be able to argue for a big salary like the presenters.
Many Stigs have bin used throughout history.

Or, JC decides to up publicity by staging a fall out, Ben is happy as he's got a book coming out, Ben comes back as the Stig, mystery is back on and everyone starts talking about it again.....
