Have to buy a mate a 40th birthday present in the morning and knowing he likes a wee dram thought a nice bottle could be in order. Having just checked with his other half he has Knockando, Isle of Jura, Glendronach and Macallan so what would people suggest as a present.

i think the ones you've mentioned are relatively smooth so maybe "old pulteney" in a similar vein - or for something slightly smokier "highland park"

Old Pulteney - 17yo single cask selection 56.9% alc. vol and still smooth as you like. Got it for my 40th last year, still a wee drop left

its his 40th right?

is he a good friend, or just a mate?

i'd look to spend a little more, something from the 'feis ile' festival would be very nice, laphroaig 17yr old... one of the distillery's does personalised bottles too, i forget which though, i did this for a friends newborn - it was very well received!

hope this helps

jt

anything Islay although that Arran is nice.

Second Stratobiker's suggestion of Bowmore.

The most approachable Islay as well, I think. If your mate likes Speysides usually, some Islays might taste a little too medicinal for his liking.

Bruichladdich is a quality drop and as you won't find it everywhere he's less likely to have had it before 😀

Budget?

If your looking to spend under £30, Bruichladdich 'Rocks' is a very nice drop and available in Sainsburys.

Balvenie Double Wood is king. Blair Atholl is good. Dalwhinnie also. If you'd posted earlier then Glen Elgin do special presentation whiskies with the recipient's name on the bottle. I got one for my 40th.

Bloody Scotch muck. We go over there in a boat to edumucate them in the ways of booze and religion and they bastardise the important part. Irish "Whiskey" is the only whiskey worth drinking and Middleton is about as good as you can get.

Given the other ones he has I'd avoid anything too peaty from Islay.

Aberlour A'bunadh is a lovely drop.

Intense fruity flavours, buttery & creamy with a syrupy fruit sweetness & rich chocolate orange notes.

If you really don't want that glass MrNutt, I'd like it. I do enjoy a wee dram and Talisker is one of my favourites. Thanks.

ardbeg (uigeadail)is the finest whisky in the world
With you on that one! Have you tried Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist as well?

For a non-Islay selection, I would through a couple of favourites out there - Glenfarclas 105 and Edradour. Glenfarclas reminded me of custard and Edradour of rich fruit cake. YUM!

I think you'll find it's a unique blend of dead sheep, turf and petrol.

medicinal nose, not too much body, very peaty throat. an acquired taste i would think.

Ever siphoned fuel? Infinitely preferable to Laphroaig. It's a common misconception among idiots that whisky needs to taste like chemical cleaning products to be any good. Cheers!

I love whisky of all varieties, but I have to say Middleton would be be my choice of all the drinks mentioned in this thread (that I've tried).

Bit pricey though, anybody know a good place to buy it?

Got to be the Balvenie Doublewood for me. First rate birthday present. In fact, that's what I gave Devs for his 40th, so it must be OK.

If you like the smoother speysides, but fancy something a wee bit smokey, have a look at Ardmore. Damn fine.

Words fail me. It was a joke, perhaps I should have decorated it liberally with smily faces and exclamation marks so you would understand the ironic and self deprecating nature of spelling the word educate - edumucate. Jesus christ.
