Our DVD player is getting rather unreliable so we are considering getting a BluRay player to replace it.

I was thinkning of spending about £100 so does anyone have any recommendations.

(looking to buy online and ship to Denmark BTW)

So you wouldn't want Iplayer, 4OD, ITV player. music videos, Love film, internet access, music/video storage and more features to use with your main TV either?
and presumably you'd be quite happy to stick your precious lil ones infront of a DVD for a couple of hours?

😕

🙄

I already have all of the above from my HD satelite box.

My kids don't watch mutch tv but I think they would spend more time in front of a PS3 and I want to avoid that.

It may be irrational, but I don't think it's illogical

Fair enough then, I had no idea you could store personal pics/vids/music on a satelite box or use them to access the internet.
Ultimately it's up to their parent(s) how much time they spend doing anything but if you're not into consoles/games at all it might well be a lot more difficult to judge what limits to set on use in the first place so I can see why you'd want to avoid having to deal with it for as long as possible.

I was surprised recently reading that around half of all PS3 use is actually non gaming.

Presumably the OP has a computer for storing music/video/pics and for internet use. If he says he doesn't want a PS3 perhaps we should listen to him rather than getting snotty about it

Btw I too have no use for a PS3

We have a fancy High Def HDTV box with a USB port on the front, a hard drive in the middle and an internet cable sticking out the back. It does all sorts of clever things 🙂

Anyway, it looks like the Sony is really good, but there is a Toshiba one for less on play.com which may end up being the one for me 🙂

We have the Sony BDPS350 and an LG one (cost c.£130) and I had a Panasonic one for about a month. Out of the 3 the LG is miles better, for the simple reason it starts up and shuts down miles quicker. The Panasonic took about a minute before it would even open the draw, and was really slow to read disks (even w/latest firmware). The Sony one was really slow too, dunno if the 370 is faster?

From what I have read the 370 gives a marked improvement in load up speed compared to the previous models.

Reading the disks is certainly not instant, but easily acceptable IMO.

The Sony has won all the magazine awards as the best budget player. I have an older Panasonic (BD35) and like the man said, very slow to start up and load. However, the picture is very good. Will probably change mine shortly for an all in one box.

if you're not getting a PS3 I wouldn't bother with a BluRay player. DVDs work OK and if you want HD content then download it. iTunes HD is cheaper than BluRay and you don't have all the boxes hanging around cluttering up the house. 720P HD iTunes is not as pretty as 1080P 24FPS BluRay. And upscaled DVD looks ropey alongside 1080P BluRay but if you're not watching much TV why worry.

PS3 is very unreliable as a blueray player. Had 2 break within 14 months due to software updates!

the Sony 370 always gets rave reviews in the mags. But how much do you trust the mags?

I went with the PS3 (and I don't play games on it)

+ve points more functionality, can watch iplayer etc and upgradeable.
-ve points had to buy a seperate remote, it's a bit of a faff

No, the 300 was 1st generation so I bought a 350 thinking it would be ok, whereas in practice it's so slow you could fall asleep waiting for a film to load. Big mistake - we hardly ever use it. The 370 would need to be a lot better before I'd buy one. Whatever you get, try before you buy.

Edit: 350 got rave reviews as well. Go figure.

I've an LG Blu-Ray player, matches the LG telly.
Fast to load, picture quality is very good IMO and the up-scaling of SD DVD works well too.
Will also connect to YOUTUBE, if that kind of thing floats your boat.

The 370 has the best iPlayer experience at the moment - better than the PS3. I've a 350 and later got a PS3. The main problem with the PS3 is the fan noise so I use the 350 most of the time. Start up times are slow but does it really matter if you have to wait 30 seconds before watching a 2 hour movie?

If I had to choose I'd probably go for a new PS3 in future BUT they're more than twice the price.

+1 for the Sony BDPS370. really is a good player and fast operating, i cant fault it, i use it connected to the internet to watch the excellent bbc iplayer and other services and have a lovefilm subscription to stream movies and get them posted, much cheaper than buying them...
i also have it connected to my media storage connected via lan so can browse my entire cd,mp3 collection, all awesomely managed via foobar media server

It might be worth getting one that 'matches' the telly - there may be advantages?

None of any consequence. Even the branded "blahLINK" stuff is largely standard and interoperable these days.

I have a Sony 350, bought on reviews of PQ, sound quality etc, not having to wait a few seconds for the drawer to open or the film to load. Buying one was a big mistake for you and you hardly ever use it for this reason? Jeez - I take it you are rather impatient?

As for the PS3, there is some issue with HD sound codecs if you have an AV amp that will process DTS Master Audio and Dolby Digital HD - can't remember what it is without searching, but the info's out there.

Yeah - my 'Anywhatsoeverlink' turns off my Samsung tv when I turn off my Sony Blu-Ray, or vice-versa. Quite annoying really.

(yes I'm aware I can disable it)

Sony s370. Awesome. So much more than a bd player for pennies. I've never even watched a blu ray movie on it yet, but use it for tv/movies on demand all the time. Loads pretty quick too
