We're all using gloves at work, most of our customers are too. Most likely a supply issue in a lot of places.
Half measures from Johnson ffs get the full lockdown done and stop dither and delay
Nothing in Johnson's measures that my household is not already doing - same for most people I imagine.
It's useful as an unambiguous message and powers of enforcement on the dicks who have been taking the piss
Half measures from Johnson ffs get the full lockdown done and stop dither and delay
Very hard to police. Hell, what he's just announced is very hard to police.
Is it just me or does it look like he's not slept in a week? About time he did some work and took some accountability.
Half measures from Johnson ffs get the full lockdown done and stop dither and delay
What would be full measures?
That is a full lockdown surely? Same as Italy and France and stricter than Germany?
Quite. Who is keeping check on how often you go out? The point is, it’s now an instruction so nobody can say it’s just advice they can choose to ignore.
Can someone clarify 'travel to and from work unless absolutely necessary'. I'm pretty sure almost all employers will class their work as absolutely necessary given no specific definition.
Full lockdown only key workers going to work, you can go out once to exercise (how many pisstakers will go out once several times a day) get the cops on the street and stop everyone.
I have an MOT booked in tomorrow... Is that essential?! Shall I just rebook for 3 weeks time.
Just watching the news now, looking at the Italy/uk graphs on death rates and when they occurred etc. When did Italy implement similar measures to what we just have? Are we ahead of Italy in that or are we in the same creek, with a similar amount of propulsion equipment.

Like the Clampdown link. The last few days of WFH has allowed me to revisit a lot of the music I listened to when I worked in that London nearly 20 years ago. Loads of public transport and train journeys spent listening to tunes whilst gazing out of the window....
Clash, Jam and Toots and the Maytals have been featuring prominently.
Can someone clarify ‘travel to and from work unless absolutely necessary’. I’m pretty sure almost all employers will class their work as absolutely necessary given no specific definition
Detail will probably follow - that is how these things usually work

s'what i was wundrin.....has he told all the self-employed builders/plasterers/painters/plumbers etc to stay at home or was that not mentioned?
might have missed it but seemed a bit woolly to me....
So alternate days I will do a 6 mile loop to Sainsbury’s. I can live with that for a while. Beer gets delivered if I want any and my business is dead so no need to commute. Time to practice the guitar and build a website.
Good stuff.
It's how we're rolling in this household anyway, so no change.
almost all employers will class their work as absolutely necessary given no specific definition.
Definition currently being drawn up
I'm hoping "medical need" includes trips to the Vets.
Beer gets delivered
will home deliveries/courier drivers still be allowed to work?
The work thing - "if you can't work from home" so any companies/people who can but have chosen not too will now be forced to put in place full WFH measures.
Bank call centre staff and the IT people who sopport these, which in my company are key workers, will, I think, be allowed to travel to work. We'll get confirmation tomorrow. We could already get a letter to confirm we're key workers so shouldn't be an issue.
I've been building laptops today for people WFH, and supporting the staff who are taking the thousands of customer service calls, and some things need a person in front of a desk. We're pretty crucial in terms of the company staying running.
We are two weeks behind Italy. To don’t base it on time from one death as this to variable and the lag depends on the starting value. You base it on time from 16 deaths when the epidemic state has really got going.
BBC still not comfortable exposing log plots. They should.
Certain people at work are essential, the operators who run our plant (We produce penicillin)
I will be able to work from home, unless I have to carry out an inspection that is required to keep plant online.
Fairly simple in our example.
will home deliveries/courier drivers still be allowed to work?
Aiui yes, pm specifically mention folk should try and use delivery services where possible.
The work thing – “if you can’t work from home” so any companies/people who can but have chosen not too will now be forced to put in place full WFH measures.
I work in predominantly construction, which is completely ignorant of any impending doom and just carrying on with heads in the sand. You can't do that work from home for all site workers. Believe me, I want to be at home. My employer thinks differently.
It would have been useful to have 24hrs notice for this lockdown.. I've got all sorts of work related loose ends to sort out but don't involve coming into contact with anyone.
Also.. as I'm self employed this is essential work as no measures have been announced that I can support my family financially..
You can still work if it’s necessary and if you’re not able to work from home
So if I take the dog round the block does that count as my day's exercise? Or can I then go out for a cycle afterwards (on my own). Because of its the former then I'm not sure I'll get much exercise in..
Either way I won't see anyone doing either.
Or will no one care either way..
My work group chat (construction) is currently on fire that they're currently having to go to work tomorrow, on a building site of 500+ people coming from all corners of London by Tube/Train etc etc
Everyone very careful to avoid the 'L' word in these announcements and commentary.
Half measures from Johnson ffs get the full lockdown done and stop dither and delay
Half measure this is no half measure.
Nice quite roads for me it’ll be like Xmas day.
will home deliveries/courier drivers still be allowed to work?Yeah
Supermarket workers have been classed as essential during the covid crisis.
I’m wondering on those details, it’s essential that work so I don’t loose my house but is that acceptable?!! I clearly can’t work from home
Self employed stone mason so not working means no money and currently no help from government
Anyone know if the bars in the Palace of Westminster are still open?
They closed them yesterday
tpbiker

Honestly? I reckon it depends where you live. We're on the edge of a rural village so suspect policing will be light and if I was so inclined I could be out of the village and in the woods within two minutes and without encountering anyone else as often as I wanted. Biggest worry would be being shopped to the authorities by the gammons.
In a bigger town/city not so easy/more restricted...
Supermarket deliveries is obvious, but what about other couriers? People buying stuff online when stuck at home will keep a lot of businesses from going under, and I need to order a 2nd monitor! 😀
People are already missing the point. Every man & his dog can think up reasons why it doesn't apply to them. If that happens lots of people die. Just obey the F****** instructions dimwits
I know in the current circumstances this is firmly first world problems, however...
I have just cancelled as much as I can of our summer holiday to Canada. We saved all last year for this, currently insurer won't cover flights or some bits we cannot claim back, but I suspect flights will not go anyway. Even if they do, will we want to travel with half the world closed up and recovering...
Four of us were to canoe in Algonquin followed by meeting Eldest_oab and pals in Whistler, Kamloops and Okanagon. Gutted for all of us.
Hey ho.
Time to focus on what we can do and more important things.
My Partner lives in Manchester, I live in West Yorks, that means we won't be able to see each other for 3 weeks.
not cool.

This, 100% this.
Just ****in stay in.

Not seeing that here, just honest questions and pondering about the practicalities and clarity of the 'instructions'.
Certainly nothing that requires the aggression and insults of your last sentence.

Yip, how people can think that is ambiguous I'll never know..
Edit, bah crossed posts
Anyway, what’s next? Army to help the rozzers?
Those are tough measures - I am afraid my cognitive bias still sees it as excessively waffle wrapped.
Biggest worry would be being shopped to the authorities
Shaun of the Dead to Hot Fuzz in one, lucky we got the World's End done by the end of January.
Normally I’d give warnings for the above.
However stay the **** in people Boris was clear. Everyday I’ve been at work the late 10 days this is escalating by slowing it can cope better. If the NHS can’t cope the death rate will be grow very quickly to uncontrollable levels.
For anyone even remotely tempted to complain they can’t ride their bike now, I and many others now have no idea if or when they will ever see their children again. Heartbroken doesn’t come close. Patience over bike ride complaints is pretty thin.
Not seeing that here, just honest questions and pondering about the practicalities and clarity of the ‘instructions’.
Er no. You're being a dimwit. Stop thinking it through, stop trying to work out what you could do to get around it, or why you're special.
Just follow the instructions.

100 yards to the woodland path that runs behind my house.
As long as one of the neighbours doesn't grass me up I'll be grand. But then again I am keen to adhere to the rules on principle so if it's definitely 'either dog walk or cycle, not both' then fair enough..
Just hoping people will now take note and stay at home other than for food/medication runs and work where necessary. I’m a cynic though and imagine that, without a presence of authority, a large subset of society will just carry on as they have been.
Stay safe everyone
I was thinking I could get DIY stuff one because things could be delivered - but I'm not sure the staff at Travis Perkins or wherever mail order depot are going to be considered essential so they probably won't be working either.
many others now have no idea if or when they will ever see their children again
son just texted to say he's moving back in with us..... oh happy days
Selfish or not I’m worried about my income from my business. I make no apologies for that. Maybe get off your high horses, just because someone has a question doesn’t mean they are defiantly breaking the rules.
I will walk or run with the dog for exercise.
Certainly nothing that requires the aggression and insults of your last sentence.
Indeed, it was a simple question. No one has complained about not being able to go on a bike so wind in the aggressiveness. I've been religiously following social distancing measures, not seen any of my mates, not visited my folks for 2 weeks..I'm quite prepared to make sacrifices so I suggest you keep your mouth shut instead of throwing insults..
People in the UK will only be allowed to leave their home for the following purposes:
Shopping for basic necessities, as infrequently as possible
One form of exercise a day – for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household
Any medical need, to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
Travelling to and from work, but only where this is absolutely necessary and cannot be done from home
have we a definition of "allowed to leave their home" , ie can you drive to somewhere for your one form of exercise per day ?
I was thinking I could get DIY stuff one because things could be delivered – but I’m not sure the staff at Travis Perkins or wherever mail order depot are going to be considered essential so they probably won’t be working either.
Aye, there are all sorts of questions regarding what is "essential". Pre-planned DIY might not be but what happens if a pipe bursts, or a flat roof needs repaired etc. The longer this goes on, the more instances we'll hit where things we usually have readily available just aren't. Mostly, we'll struggle on - if a kettle breaks we can use a pan instead - but that's not sustainable in the long term. Let's just hope this initial 3 week period has an impact and that the restrictions can be gradually lifted.

Again, no need for the insults. You have absolutely no idea what my situation, attitude or mindset is.
FWIW I have absolutely no intention to ignore the instructions (and like many others here have been trying to stay ahead of the government for a while now), just pointing out that context might affect people's decision making.
Just follow the instructions.
I'll give a little bit of support to the other poster
One form of exercise a day - for example a run, a walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household.
To give a daft example - we're a student house of ten who all cycle and and members of the same cycle club, can we exercise together?
Yeah - we just authorised staff to spend £100 to buy a monitor for their worklaptops if they want one - but will deliverables still be coming through?
I know we're long past the point when anything is surprising with this whole situation but when the first news reports came out in December/Jan who would have though it would end up here, and who would have thought we'd all be massively relieved and supportive about it? We're going to be telling stories about this for as long as we live, and probably living with the consequences.
Should have happened two weeks ago though, and I think Boris will be gone before the year's out when we know just how many lives his dithering and negligence has cost. Cummings hopefully will be behind bars.
Trying to find some clarity on this. My wife's horses are kept on a farm a few miles away. She's worried that going to see them, and care for them all get her in trouble.
They need feed and checking once a day. I said that it should be a genuine reason and despite other people at the same farm they can be seen without coming into contact with anyone else.
Is there any formal guidelines available yet. Nothing on the gov website I could find.
People are already missing the point. Every man & his dog can think up reasons why it doesn’t apply to them.
That about sums it up, non of us really want to be in the locked in the hutch.
no farming out the kids to other family members or friends.
In France we have forms to fill to give the reasons to go out. If for work you also need a certificate from employer to say you can't wfh citing all the laws etc...
Police check it. I have been controlled once in 6 days and 1000s of fines have been given.

I do and I’m more than happy to do so if it lessens the risk of my family or vulnerable members of society becoming ill.
Work will have to decide whether they want to set me up to WFH for the "essential" part of the job, leave it for our existing home workers to deal with, or make me go into the office
They need feed and checking once a day. I said that it should be a genuine reason and despite other people at the same farm they can be seen without coming into contact with anyone else.
Plainly, animal welfare will be an essential task.
I do and I’m more than happy to do so if it lessens the risk of my family or vulnerable members of society becoming ill.
The original point was more in the spirit of what people what drives people to create convoluted exceptionalism.
Yip, how people can think that is ambiguous I’ll never know..
So I work in a necessary job (key worker) I will go to work. All the construction worker in London for example (filling the tube) are they necessary? I wouldn't think so but some of them/their employers would say they are. I would say that is open to interpretation.
I guess driving the SO to work as an agency carer (she doesn’t drive) will give me a chance to get out of the house. Not surprised it has come to this, the agency sent round a letter to hand to police a week or so back. So a fairly obvious outcome. Now to sort out the turbo trainer.
That about sums it up, non of us really want to be in the locked in the hutch.
I'm not too keen on the sound of that either.
For clarity on a question somebody asked up there: the initially low number of deaths today was because it was using thew figure for Scotland+Wales and England hadn't declared yet
(I'm assuming you mean on the worldometer/uk site - they cite their sources so you can go & check. Often Sky is first with the UK numbers but today's part numbers came from tweets by public health in wales and scotland)
To give a daft example – we’re a student house of ten who all cycle and and members of the same cycle club, can we exercise together?
Well all going out together would actually minimise the chance of interacting with others in comparison with all of you heading out individually. Everyone will think your are being totally irresponsible but you're going to be very visible and actually it's more likely you'll encourage people to give you a wide birth.
Can I go to my shop tomorrow to secure it and remove all the money and perishables?
no farming out the kids to other family members or friends.
That’s been a thing for awhile now.
Should have happened two weeks ago though,
The reason why has been explained a number if times including tonight why they didn’t.
I consider myself lucky in fact privileged I’ll be still be getting paid through out this, I’m pushing my local spending even more than normal. However, I know what challenges I and my staff will face the conversations we’ll be facing with patients and their relatives. I’m actually starting to brick it and trust me I don’t flap.
Look after yourselves, your relatives, neighbours and friends folks. Use the advantages technology gives, talk, laugh and cry with each other.
We will beat the ****er.
Bizarre how the US works.
Individual states need to buy their own medial supplies, end up bidding against each other (and other countries) for available supplies- masks normally at 75 cents each, went up to $4 each, now $7. Trump has signed the order allowing him to use the Defense Production Act, to allow federal control over production and distribution in industries, to make sure stuff gets where it's needed most, but won't use it, saying that government doesn't nationalise business.
Well said Drac.

It's an interesting answer.
I think I should have given a stunt question warning on that one - it was a totally fabricated situation. Taking the how do the rules apply to me to the most stretched but still vaguely credible point I could come up with.
There were nine other people but I had to re-purpose them as food during my last self isolation. Mainly due to being terrible at preparatory panic buying.
Trying to find some clarity on this. My wife’s horses are kept on a farm a few miles away. She’s worried that going to see them, and care for them all get her in trouble.
Animal welfare is absolutely vital, I can’t see any issues with this at all. My sis-in-law has a couple of horses, plus they have a couple of dogs, so the dogs can get all the exercise they need when at the paddock.
have we a definition of “allowed to leave their home” , ie can you drive to somewhere for your one form of exercise per day ?
No exact definition, but I'm defining it as only running or cycling "from home".
