I'm looking to kick start my cycling again next month and fancy a trip to Tenerife (combining a bit of riding and getting a winter tan).
I've never been before so where would you recommend I stay? Somewhere nice and quiet would be good.
Thanks
I stayed in Puerto de la Cruz during the summer. It's at the foot of Tiede and there is lots of biking to be had. Ralph at MTB active is a great guide if you want to be shown the better trails.
Check the weather, I seem to remember some months are much wetter than others.
January in the North will be cool and very wet. You're at a surprising altitude despite being next to the coast.
Better off coming south and looking at bagging a cheap package.
You'll do far more climbing too due to how the island formed.
2800mts vertical if you fancy Los Cristianos to Llano de Ucanca.
Be prepared to be sick though at some point 😆
Lived there for 12yrs and ex-inlaws still do. He's a lifelong cyclist and has gone around the island several times, up and over, etc.
As for location - quiet will be Los Gigantes - expect Germans and a climb out that will make you want a car.
Callao Salvaje won't be too bad.
Go round a bit back towards the airport and you have Costa del Silencio which is always quiet! A few Brit bars, usual nightlife, etc but easy to chill. Coast is rock but rocky bay at Amarilla Bay (nudist beach just round the rocks - tricky walk), pebble beach and harbour 10min walk in Las Galletas. If you pop down - make sure you go into the Atlantico Bar (easy to find - right near the harbour with doors on either side) early in the morning for the best fresh Tortilla Espa?ola you will ever eat.
You can keep moving to Amarilla Golf, Golf del Sur or El Medano all of which will vary in how quiet they are and prices.
It can drop quite quick of an evening even in the south so take a decent top/jacket and enjoy.
I'd be up in Arico this January if I wasn't heading to Iceland 8)
Thanks hammyuk, very helpful.
I've stayed at the Alta Montana in Vilaflor, this is ~halfway up the mountain, quiet, some good routes for both off & on road. Quiet & some real Tenerife village life.
can get some really good deals in golf del sur and it's reasonably well located for los cristianos.
Golf Del Sur is badly located for Los Cristianos Davey.
While the new road from Guaza into LC has made it a lot better - the road from Las Chafiras to Guaza is and always has been appalling.
Agree on getting a deal there but if you aren't riding everywhere you will need a car.
Oh yeah sorry I meant by taxi. I really need to read the OPs better 😆
I do like los cristianos though. It's very hilly but that might be what you're after
Los Christianos is a dump but you can easily get there by bus from Golf del Sur if you must.
Golf del Sur probably would tick the OPs requirements as a location.
Lanzarote. Tenerife is a shithole. Worst place is ever had the misfortune to visit.
In fact I dislike it so much even when my mother in law owned an apartment out there we could use for free we never went.
Lanzarote on the other hand is everything Tenerife isn't. Clean, much quieter, better riding if that's your thing and all round a much more pleasant experience.
