I'm loath to stay in a multi bed dorm (I realised on my last holiday that they have a negative effect on your enjoyment of a place) and want somewhere to stay that's not drastically expensive. Anyone know of anywhere?
I've got a budget of about £300 for a week's stay for accomodation but would be happy to pay less.

If you stay out in the sticks, say NJ, about 30 mins train / bus ride in, then you can get a cheapy hotel room for that much. Or put a wanted ad in Craigslist - you might get a good offer from someone off on holiday.
