Friends are planning a trip to the Big Apple in April for seven nights and are looking for some hotel recommendations. 4* ideally, nothing wildly expensive, and not a shed either.

Any suggestions?

I stayed in The Chelsea once in Manhatten, can't beat it for the history. It's bohemian and the walls feature art by people who have stayed there. Bob Dylan/Dylan Thomas/Sid & Nancy/Jimi Hendrix/Janis Joplin all stayed there, Eddie Izzard was staying there at the same time as me.

Not sure how many stars it has, but I've visited NYC 5 or 6 times and nowhere sticks out in my mind as being so utterly memorable as this place.

might be worth trying priceline

i got a cracking deal on there for the westin in times square, was about $110 per night for a suite including taxes

also got a good deal via priceline for the hyatt regency in jersey city which is on the other side of the hudson ($90 per night). got a helicopter transfer there from the airport too...that was superb, felt like a rockstar and it was not that much more expensive than what a cab would have cost (was $100)

The Chatwal hotel. Astonishing Art-Deco hotel, near Times Square.

Check the reviews out.

I've stayed here 4 times on my visits to see the Allman Brothers Band.
Nice ,quiet, clean. on the Upper West Side ,close to central park and not a milllion miles from the tourist stuff.
