I fancy a weekend trip to wales for a surf and a day canoeing, we are both beginners so something that would suit. Any suggestions?

No idea about skill level as I don't surf but I do see a few between Aberdyfi and Tywyn on Cemetary Beach.

You could then Canoe the Estuary

If you've got your own kit then the Gower makes a good weekend (as per leggyblonde). If you need to hire kit, lot of places a bit further West in Pembrokeshire, do a search for kayak / surf hire in Pembrokeshire.

Stay well away from the mouth of the Dovey if you are beginners, the currents are very strong and you will be half way to Ireland before you know it. I used to do a lot of waterskiing there and the speed that the water goes out is quite scary. Once tried to canoe from Aberdovey to Borth and capsized several times. For a combination of surfing and canoeing, the surf off Borth's main beach can be good if the wind is in the right direction and the canoe along the river Lerry at the back of Borth through to Ynys Las is quite nice. Other places to try in Wales (it's a big place) are Hells Mouth on the Lleyn Peninsula, Benllech Bay on Angelsey or around the Gower in South Wales.

Up north, Lleyn for surfing, Abersoch or Porth Neigwl. Conwy/Anglesey for kayaking. If you're heading south, TYF in St David's used to have a good rep.

You want to get yourself to PJ's surf shop in Llangennith right on the end of the Gower for the surfy bit and then on your way back pop into Monmouth or Ross (or Symonds Yat) and do some canoeing along the River Wye. Lovely stretch of river.

Where is wales

It's to the West of England, if you squint at a map of the UK it's the bit that looks like a Pig's head.
If you let me know your address I can provide you with a more comprehensive list of directions.

If your camping try Newport, Pembs. Carn Ingli behind you for a bit of biking, can be great surf at the beach but it needs a good swell (look at the surf cams on whitesands/ newgale and take 50% off whatever they say). For kayaks go to Cym yr Eglys (otherwise known as Come here legless)which is almost always sheltered by Dinas head (if your experienced go to the bitches - check out Big Blues footage on tinterweb). Good fishing off the beach at Newport too if you like your bass/mackerel. Oh and the surf forecast for the weekend is looking nice! Alternatively whitesands near st davids is cracking too.

Southerndown is bloody lovely.

I've been going for years. I had a nice couple of days windsurfing around the corner in Newton, then 2 hot beach days at Southerndown and some of it's nearby beaches of Dunraven, Nash & Wick

Pembrokeshire definitely. Freshwater West and Newgale for surfing. I'm no kayaker but you see lots of people doing it near stackpole, it looks great place for it under the cliffs.
