Having looked in B&Q and homebase they don't seem to sell nice bits of (non-pine) bits of wood.

I'm after some thickish bits of oak / hardwood to make some shelves from - say 3.5ft by 1.5ft.

Near woking- any ideas?

Timber merchant - used to be a good one for hardwoods near reading (Woodley maybe?), I got a load of Iroko to make a table from a few years back. EDIT - maybe it was Whitley, now Arnold Laver but used to be independent?

Local timber merchants or sawmill, but try a few - some will say "I can get that for you at £lots per square foot", in which case go away; others will have a selection that you can look at and choose the pieces with the best grain or the straightest ones. Or try somewhere like http://www.timbercut4u.co.uk.

Most timber merchants just sell the usual 5th grade Pine and some extortionately priced Meranti (what passes for Mahogany these days; pretty pish poor really).
There should be a specialist hardwood importer in the area. Bear in mind that the Oak will be rough sawn and that they might not do retail.

chickenman has it - locally all i found was a mecca of we can get it but itll cost you and sucking of teeth for oak.

timbercut4u worked quite well and no qualms ordering from them again.

i use howdens if i need a little bit but it costs im just stocking up for a 3 room order at the moment with timber4u as i need door linings for 6 doors at the same time.

One more recommendation - if you're prepared for a trip round the M25 these people http://catalogue.chilterntimber.co.uk have some good stuff, I got some nice oak from them not so long ago at a very reasonable price compared to most.

Try reclaimed wood/furniture places, as they might have bits of really nice salvageable old wood. Commercial timber yards tend to specialise in stuff used in the building trade, and probably won't have any off cuts of anything nice lying around, as they need the space.

I think he might want to do the shelves quite soon, rather than have to get permission to fell an oak, cut, dry and store the wood correctly for a few years.

Hth. 😉

trail_rat - not sure where I'd go to be honest, there are timber merchants all over here (Elgin).
Reason I mentioned local joiners is have a good contact in local firm, not sure where they source their oak but they do work in oak quite a lot if needs be.

We've got Moray Timber (they'd be best bet to be honest, and I used to raid their offcuts bin for firewood), Rembrand Timber (they're a chain aren't they?), couple of others as well as the usual chains.

There's a local DIY store that /might/ have oak but long shot.

I suppose there must be local sawmills as well, and will be other merchants in outlying places - Fochabers e.g. Given the amount of forest cover in Moray, you'd imagine it wouldn't be hard to get decent wood.

As with cybicle's suggestion, it'll be cheaper if you can recycle something from second-hand furniture dealer, auction clearing etc. I built a desk from an oak table for less than £30.

Where are you as I know a good sawmill around the Taunton way, however he only sells to you if he *likes* you, and he can be a difficult man to get on with, heard him tell more than one person to "f off out of his sight and not come back, as your a stupid c" when they asked a daft question.
