[Closed] where are all the pics of snow bound SUVs?
come on guys...pull your fingers outs.
bring a ray of sunshine into this cold winters day and show us your pics of idiots stuck in their stupid big wanger mobiles. never fails to amuse me when I see one in a ditch.
I think the official term is but isn't it a bit like shooting fish in a barrel
(for the sensitive of car ownership - 😉 )
[post edited, take this as a warning. Mod]
All the 4x4s accidentally caught fire when the road tax was hiked in the summer. Non left to fall in a ditch
Still time to edit that clubber. You'll be done for SFA in the new austerely moderated forums. 🙂
I thought it was "**** (that naughty word clubber used minus the er) tanks"I think the official term is...
If it wasn't for a 4x4 and a very nice driver giving me a lift home yesterday, i'd still be beside my broken down car yesterday......so I can't get involved with your senseless need to start an argument
I don't think that my term is really swearing, is it, particularly as it's an accepted term - round here at least. The @ was put in more because some webfilters will block the entire page if they find certain text. Mods - up to you - remove if you think it's wrong and I'll not use it again.
Jeremy Hunt-mobiles 😀
Jeremy Hunt Cars - it's all to do with swapping the first letters apparently - so it was a poor decision to make him Culture secretary...
People have had bans for less. I've reported it anyway as I think the rules should apply to everyone. 😉
Meanwhile.. on a 4x4 forum that I frequent, people are discussing how best to help stranded motorists, whilst not ending up like the unfortunate good samaritan in thisstory.
But then again, I guess they are just better people that you MrCrispy.
'sok, I reported it myself 😉
OK, got my warning and will moderate myself better in future...
Sanctimoney vs. Humour...the internet rumbles on...
Hmmm, let me guess why the random vitriol flingers are out in force again? No no I just cannot guess...
4x4s are helping people all over the country in these conditions.
If you haven't got one (usually because you can't afford one) tough .
If seeing a car in a ditch "never fails to amuse you" you are a muppet of the lowest order.
[post edited for swear filter avoidance. 2 day ban given. Mod]
If you haven't got one (usually because you can't afford one) tough ****.
I sincerely hope that's tounge-in-cheek but if I'm honest, I'm not sure it is. If not, 😆
EDIT - edited my quote since I'm already on a warning... (would that count?)
Is a swear word? Anyone want to report it?

^^^^
It is a case of swear filter avoidance Chris.
here we go again 😉
clubber, you realise I was joking 😯
See what I mean though?
That's not in the filter though... so there's nothing to avoid
Indeed - Hadn't read Mark's post about the rules so didn't realise we'd had a big clampdown on 'naughty words'...
Shame that Smurf Matt got a ban though as I was secretly quite hoping that he was serious when he made his comment.
DD - your card's marked - best hope I don't see you out on the trails 😉
.
If you haven't got one (usually because you can't afford one)
Hahahaha!
So where are the photos then!
Towed a Toureg out of the ditch last night. But no pic. Then towed an X5 out - tried to take a pic but the owner went ballistic! Packed up my tow rope - gave him the finger and drove off leaving him there without a word. Then pulled out a guy in his car who was going to Sick Kids. I expect to be rewarded in the next life.

We have no snow, still no snow, its a shame would really like to have some! just so i can pictures like the one above!
Whats with the mod's editting, not seen that before.
dazzlingboy that LR is lovely.
Always liked them.
Probably not the most pratical option for lugging the kids about though.
Wonder if I could graft the body of our Galaxy onto a LR chassis...? 🙂
@taki - 5 seats, so 2 kids, 2 labs and all our kit no problem! Great at this time of year mind you.
Have you ever noticed that when someone is stuck, if there's a selection of 4x4s around, they will always ask the Land Rover owner for help. 8)

They seem to patrol round these parts in packs as soon as the snow comes.
Then they disapear as soon as the snow and ice go.
Only to reappear in the for sale section of the local newspaper 😉
When I was a subby doing power line clearance, I used to spend the day running round in the Landy towing out the firms Hi-Lux's & transits. Sometimes I didn't get to climb a single tree.
I miss that 130 Hi-Cap tipper.
I think mrchrispy was asking for pics of faux 4x4s stuck not "proper" ones like land rovers etc (so calm down matt) presumably there's very few pics of them getting stuck 🙂
I'd guess any "proper" 4x4s with big rims and low profile tyres are fair game too.
A scan of an old photo of my previous Land Rover, definitely not stuck in the snow while gathering winter fuel.

What a load of old balls this swearing clampdown is.

Not in the snow, but we were run off the road along the Loch Long road avoiding a collision with an oncoming car getting a bit to spirited in a corner. Ended with the two nearside wheels in a small concrete gully and the van sitting on its axels, wheels bearly touching the bottom of the gully. No other damage thankfully but not enough traction to back out. Within minutes a bunch of seemingly psychic greenlaners appeared from all directions, half a dozen or so, all fighting amongst each other as to the best way to recover us. We only needed be dragged back a meter or so to where the gully shallowed and we could have got the rest of the way out under own steam. But high lift jacks were out of one landy, sand ladders out of another - argue argue. Finally one guy insisted that the answer was to use his new kinetic energy rope and snatch us out forwards rather than backwards. Which he did - dragging the van sparking on its axels for 20 yards along the gully before smashing it into the parapet of a bridge. Ace!
Dear God thats a lot of snow DB. We have hardly had any! NO fair!
I don't think this a go at 4wd owners in general, just all the school run mums and other idiots in their Cayennes, RR Sports, X5s etc. Least thats the way I see it. I don't begrudge anyone who and their stupidly wide tarmac biased tyres are worse than many normal saloons in this weather. Trouble is most of them seem to drive like 4wd makes them invincible.
Good on you dazzlingboy, karma points in the bag.
I stopped on a hill near my house on Sunday to offer two separate cars a tow - there I was, in my little homosexual hairdressers car, happily chugging away in 4x4 High ratio with the diff locked, there they were spinning away going nowhere...
unfortunately neither of them had tow ropes with them, ah well, I suppose I at least showed willing 😆

Couldn't agree more.
I have to pass by two independent schools on my way to work everyday, and can hardly move for people driving their status symbols in and out of the grounds. I generally assume that if you own a Landrover 90 or 110, you probably use it, whereas there are a whole host of shiny 4wds that have hardly encountered dust.
But mentioning this is supposedly 'class envy'. That is, as opposed to being utter stupidity on the part of the drivers.
I salute real 4x4 drivers, and deeply resent posers.
It's not just posing tho saxon, people get these behemoths for safety reasons. Honest. Now you could go with a normal car with 5star ncap safety rating or you could say "sod everyone else" and get something huge and heavy. Momentum, you canny change the laws of physics, etc, occupants are safe* everyone else out there is screwed.
*apart from hitting something immoveable of course, they forget about that, thats where your extra stars are worth more than your mass (I believe)
If you plot car accident deaths against the size of the vehicle in which the dead people are travelling, there's no correlation - at least in the US.

How about if you plot deaths vs the size of vehicle that hit them?
That would be included in the first plot. But I don't have the data to hand for analysis 🙂
Snow-bound? I think not... I love my Discovery, been dragging soft-roaders out of ditches and up hills for the past 10 days up here 🙂

Soft roader or Faux x 4?
Or are they different things (2wd Quashqui would be a faux x 4 for example)?
had to laugh at my ex wife being really surprised that her Quashqui was no good in the snow. she thought it was a 'kind of jeep thing'
My x-trail is working well so far but not sure if it classes as a proper 4x4 or not. It has tinted windows, alloy wheels, 173 horses and in car gadgets. But also has sensible tyres a big load space for bikes and camping equipment or trips to the tip.
When looking at buying it the other options were a mondeo estate or zafira (yawn).
Having gone through owning series land rovers, 90's, RR classics, Mk2 RR ( and having driven all the other models inbetween ) and now having a Mk3 RR, I have to admit that the best of the lot in terms of the snow/ice handling is the current bling bling Mk3 RR.
If you know how to drive with consideration in a 4x4 ( and i've done a fair amount of off-roading so know when wheels are slipping etc ), when you add the more modern traction control and DSC stuff the modern vehicle has, its surprised me at just how good its been in this weather.
Thats not to say it doesn't lose grip / skip ( cause it does ... a lot ) , just that when you do, its good at getting it back again when you ask it in the right manner, and it does so a wee bit better than the older landies ... which were also very good.
Now you could go with a normal car with 5star ncap safety rating or you could say "sod everyone else" and get something huge and heavy. Momentum, you canny change the laws of physics, etc, occupants are safe* everyone else out there is screwed.
the high centre of gravity makes them more likely to roll and there is a higher risk of going over roadside barriers (central reservation etc)
you could say "sod everyone else" and get something huge and heavy.
also the main attitude of Volvo drivers in their little safety "bubble"

This is perhaps a little more heavy-handed than necessary. Does anyone really want the forum to be as po-faced as this?
Time for a self-imposed break, I feel.
pfffft. Yaris and snow chains = excellent way to navigate 8miles of un ploughed, un-gritted, ice and snow rutted highland road. Even helped pull a Navara out of a dodgy position half in a didtch yesterday...
Yaris? Strange you should mention that - I stopped to help a Yaris in Perthshire to offer to push. He nearly went mental: something about plastic panels. I left him to it. Was he serious?
I'll see if my brother got any pics of him towing a stuck landy up an icy hill last monday, with his combi van

"They seem to patrol round these parts in packs as soon as the snow comes."
Some of them actually do, offroad clubs and other folks with actual offroaders often support the emergency services in bad weather as well as just being generally helpful. OK you can ask what their motivation is, is it purely selfless etc but who cares, if it means you get pulled out of a ditch? It's a cool thing to do regardless.
That said, the only road vehicle moving around my end of edinburgh yesterday was a 2-wheeled Northwindmobile and it passed all manner of 4x4s, which had the ability to drive over snow but not over the car in front.
And round here, all the landys get up the hills fine. Just try stopping 2.5t+ as they slide down the other side...
Find the photo on here of the X5 (or was it a Cayenne?) stuck on the Quantocks last year - that made me so happy!
Why hasn't WCA posted on this thread yet - no camera??

That picture gives me the smilies.
that's what I'm talking about 😀
I'm a bit worried. If it's really snowy and I can afford a 4x4, what does it mean if I don't buy one?
I'm a bit thick, right?
I think thats very considerate parking for a BMW driver, not blocking the road at all 🙂
no 4x4s but I just liked the quantity of abandoned cars

Go fella 🙂
4x4 responce is a volentry thing they operate all over the uk, here in exeter last year when it snowed and people couldnt get up or down haldon hill they helped ferry stranded people to exeter race course , they also help nurses etc got to old and disabled people, mostly club members etc, helping out you know when other people need help.
there are 4x4's and there are these idiots.
a real 4x4 and a 1/2 decent driver are worth their weight in gold in these conditions
4x4's are an easy target for gits like me to point and laugh at when a combination of road tyres + winter weather + inconsiderate driving dumps them in a hedge, but i'd really like a Discovery, i know they're not brilliant, but i got to drive one around the highlands for a day - it was ace!
TBH I find my wifes 1.5dci Qashqai surprisingly ok in the snow...up to a point.
However, it does have 4 Nokian winter grips on it....and I also recognise that it is only a Golf sized car with the benefit of some more ground clearance so drive accordingly.
I'd rather have it in this weather than the X5 with 20" wheels and summer biased tyres. I also could not afford nor justify an X5....
The 4x4 Response groups do very good work in the UK and it's not always recognised.
Then towed an X5 out - tried to take a pic but the owner went ballistic! Packed up my tow rope - gave him the finger and drove off leaving him there without a word.
What can I say, this brought a smile to my face 😆
When my 4x4 was actually driveable a couple of days back, an LDV coal delivery pick-up got stuck sideways trying to turn round on our road, which was a sheet of ice.
I managed to pull him completely round so he was facing in the right direction and get going.
This with road tyres (although not low profiles) and the assistance of a low ratio box.
Well my brother last week when it was bad further south was doing voluntary work by going out to places normal cars couldn't get to, so that elderly etc could make hospital appointments they had waited months for.
Was the first time he had ever really used the car in anger, but normally it wouldn't be used off-road.
He just saw an appeal on the news and called the helpline.
People across the road have an X5 and one of those tall golf/suv types, dropped their kids of at school the other day in my trusty Primera!!They couldn't get of their drives, but their again they didn't make any attempt to clear snow/ice either
The golf thing is even parked with the front wheels over the crest of their drive so it can get out.
Really what is the point in these vehicles
Still miss my Disco though
Blimey - the swear avoidance thing has got a bit heavy handed.
Clubber - of course I wasn't being serious you tool (oooh hang on - another ban for saying "tool?")!
Just before the snow really hit:
It's been superb in these conditions. Starting to miss the BM a bit though - not been moved for over two weeks!
Now I've proof read my post and there appears to be NO swearing.
Now I've proof read my post and there appears to be NO swearing.
However, you have made a comment on forum moderation...
Don't worry, we'll keep your seat warm 😉
I'll make another - posts have been closed and people banned for very very lame reason recently.
I have a strong suspicion as to why this is happening. Heavy handed moderation ruins forums.
End of.
I have a strong suspicion as to why this is happening.
Oooh! Do tell!
Is it to prevent offensive language on the forum perhaps?
It is happening because it's their forum. If you don't like it you can go elsewhere.
I personally like the stricter approach and long may it continue. As I've said before if you feel the need to type swearwords then you should be learning some new words to express yourself properly.
