A Jetpack

He had a Simca briefly - I liked it. He didn't.

A Capri 3000s in orange or an Escort RS1800.

But no, we got another Cortina. Metallic brown with a beige vinyl roof.

I was thinking of that Rancho as I opened the thread - my Dad even said he was considering it before thinking better of it.

And my 9 year old nephew is currently informing every adult of his acquaintance A) that they should buy a Bugatti Veyron and B) how rubbish his dad is for not buying the aforementioned car!

Probably a Midget or Herald. Later stuff like a Lotus Cortina or a Brabham Viva.

I always wanted the Fuego or the Rover 2600 (was that its official name?)

My grandad got a Renault 11, I was gutted he didn't get the TXE Electronic edition. To a pre-pubescent that would've been like owning KITT.

[img] [/img]

"More to go wrong" he said. Gutted.

Harry the Spider - my dad had that exact model of Manta GTE in the same colour. The sad thing is, I really wanted him to have an Astra GTE. How our motoring aspirations have changed in the last 30 years.

A 1953 Nash Healey. A long held favourite of mine. The car would have been 8 yr old then too, so maybe affordable.

Only car I can remember wanting my parents to get was a Nissan Prarie (we always bought Nissans so that's the only dealer we went into). Cos it had a huge interior and a sliding back door!

My Dad had two Fuegos - second one brand new (was stationed in Germany so tax free). It had remote central locking, space age tech in 1984. Wasn't the turbo though, just the GTS.

Can't believe no ones mentioned this. I sooooo wanted dad to get one, but he said 'no, coz they don't have a luggage cover for the boot'. I took that at face level until we met one of our family friends who bought a coupe (not quattro, but close) showed me that it did indeed have a cover: "daaaaaad! Look! It does have a cover we can get one!"

He did get a cavalier SRI which was pretty cool.

When I was 8 I probably wanted my dad to get a Batmobile. I can't believe the rest of you were so blooming conservative!
As it happens he bought a HUUUGE Citroen with 3 rows of seats and a tendancy to conk out if it was fed crap petrol.
Then he got a 3 litre Scimitar which was dead cool and he even let me hit the over drive switch sometimes. That's a huge deal to a little girl!!! 🙂

He bought this :-

Oh, how I cried. He bought it from Hastings Deering in Sydney, in the 2 years he had it, he burnt out 8 clutches. It went back to them suffice it to say.

As soon as I read the thread title, I thought of the Matra Rancho, I remember the first time we saw one was in a showroom in Paignton and Dad took it for test drive. It was pea green and me and my brother pestered him for weeks to buy it. I thought they were the coolest cars at the time, but looking back my dads Gold Mk1 Granada 3.0 ghia (with the vinyl roof and velour seats)was WAY cooler.

One of these, idealy with "Slot Mags" (even an eight year old knew not just any buggy would do, it needed to be a Meyers Manx!)I had a little orange pedal car version, until I snapped it in half doing jumps - my god there were some tears that day!....

My dad was quite cool, started with a brand new xr2 which I loved in 84, then a golf gti mk2 then a 16v version. Moved onto a corrado vr6 then onto an Audi 80 quattro, which he owned until I was 19 and I bought it. 2.8 quattro at 19 was dangerous and I blew all my mates away, then it was stollen 🙁

He had a Capri 3000s with sidewinder exhausts along bottom of doors in 77-79 I think but my mother made him sell it when she got pregnant with me.

He now has a BMW z4 m coupe and has had m3, 330ci club sport, TT.

So quite a nice little selection over the years.

or

VW Jetta Mk.1.

All I wanted was a Sierra Ghia with pepperpot alloys.

I thought rear headrests and electric windows were a revelation!

[img] [/img]

Ended up with a Cavalier GLS, which was somewhat disappointing, but still pretty cool compared to the crap cars we had before (renault 4, renault 6, renault 14)

[img] [/img]

My Uncle had a Renault Fuego, but I told all my friends he had a Porsche!

I remember my dad wanting one of these when his company car was up for a change.

[img] [/img]

The guy who ran the car fleet said no and that my dad should come up with an alternative... So he put together a list that contained this and others like it.

[img] [/img]

He got his.

Can't really remember exactly what I wanted him to buy, but around that era he went through a number of spectacularly unreliable motors ranging from Austin Allegros and Princesses to Morris Marinas.

What I DO remember is that my brother and I crashed his brand new Marina the day after he got it. I was 8 and he was 7. Dad took it over to show his father and left us in the car WITH THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION.

When you're 8 years old in the 1970s, your only knowledge of how to drive a car comes from bad saturday matinee movies where the action is filmed against a moving backdrop while the actor moves his hands rapidly from side to side. Cue collision with immovable wooden telegraph pole and a soundly-smacked arse. Didn't do me any harm though...

At around that age my dad had a company helicopter at his disposal so what car didn't really come into it! If my memory serves me right he drove a Jaguar Mk IX at about that time. Blimey, how pretentious does that make me 😳

Can't believe no ones mentioned this.[ur Quattro]

After his 2.8 injection Capri, he bought one of these (older, not the 20v, but in Nautic Blue). Flash git was only in his mid-30s.

At various times he had

Lime Green Escort Mexico
[img] [/img]

White Manta - seen rallying as late as 2003
[img] [/img]

Black 5 GT Turbo - Hard to find a picture of one that hasn't been "modified"
[img] [/img]

Green E36 M3 Evolution
[img] [/img]

I would've been 8 when he had the Renault 5, I can still remember the noise and the rush when the Turbo kicked in.

He has got a lot more sensible in the last ten years and now wonders why I am so interested in performance cars 🙄

I always wanted to see a Rover SD1 on the driveway, instead we were treated to a succession of Austin 1100's, Maxis and Mini's. I guess it was this that taught me car maintenance - I spent many an hour at weekends amongst scrapyards with my dad...

Rancho - My 4 yr old son is now playing with a toy rancho I had as a youngster - the real thing might not have been as tough as it wanted you to think it was but Corgi can build one with bombproof build quality!

As there were five kids by then, we wanted space, so after he drove one of these
[img] [/img]
under a lorry in the fog, we got one of these
[img] [/img]
though years later after a Victor we eventually got round to three rows of seats with a Saab 95, 504 Family and a CX familiale. Never thought of sports cars at all till later.

Great thread! Always wanted my dad to get a [img] [/img]

but he just got a boring 2litre version on steel wheels.

Then he had a couple of Rover 800s before turning into a boy racer and having 4 of these:

[img] [/img]

I remember reading about the Ferrari Mondial as a kid and thinking it would make a great family car - 4 seat you know!

Three of them I think, followed by this, a Citreon BX

[img] [/img]

Mind you someones done an up to date concept version of the GSA which I wouldn't have minded if I was still that age.

Another kid lusting after an SD1, instead we had a litany of crud that reads thusly;
peugeot 404 estate in powder blue
Renault 12 estate in metallic blue
Polski Fiat 125p estate in beige
Lada Riva
Lada Cossak beige again
Proton 1.5 twice mint green
I decided to leave home at that point

honestly dont remember wanting anything else, how sad am i! lol know i got super excited about getting the next new company car in 1990 and that was a sierra 1.8 GLX in blue! and would argue till blue in the face that it was Far superior to Any Vauxhall as it was a Ford and they were simply better! haha!

My dad got one of these just after I passed my driving test and his company insurred me on it.

It was brilliant. It is probably the reason why I bought The Mighty Vectra 20 odd years later.

I was quite happy. My dad had one of these.
[img] [/img]

I thought the fins over the brake lights were the coolest thing ever. but then I do work in IT now so I'm probably not the best barometer for what's hip and down with the kids.

When I was older mind, my dad got the most awesome car on earth.
[img] [/img]

Now that's a car to learn to drive in. No wonder I'm such a brilliant driver now.
