Greg James' 'is that a farmer or a pirate impression?' ooh aar game (BBC Radio 1) is on in the office.
Which got me thinking: what exactly does 'ooh arr' mean in pirate-ese?
No idea, but this radio sketch about Pirates asking for a training day is worth a listen;
'is that a farmer or a pirate impression?
Both.
It's a west county accent/saying, that area being synonymous with both farming AND pirates.
🙂
I always thought that 'ooh arr' mean't that a pirate was in agreement.
Should we make them walk the plank? - 'ooh arr'
Is that a parrot on your shoulder? - 'ooh arr'
etc etc.....
I always thought that 'ooh arr' mean't that a pirate was in agreement.
So if a pirate didn't agree with you he'd say "ooh arr... not!" ?
And, come to think about it, what's "shiver me timbers" about?
They were some crazy MoFos, those pirates!

They just ARRRRR!
"ooh arr"
Translates as: " I have carefully considered your proposal and I am in full agreement"
Thanks, guys! 🙂
talklikeapirate.com says...
Arrr! - This one is often confused with arrrgh, which is of course the sound you make when you sit on a belaying pin. "Arrr!" can mean, variously, "yes," "I agree," "I'm happy," "I'm enjoying this beer," "My team is going to win it all," "I saw that television show, it sucked!" and "That was a clever remark you or I just made." And those are just a few of the myriad possibilities of Arrr!
So that settles it! 😉
So if a pirate didn't agree with you he'd say "ooh arr... not!" ?
Naarrrr!
What would a Pirate say if he fancied someone..
ohhh Phwar!!
Ta Dah...
I'll get me coat.
You're all mental. Bugger this, I'm off to the barrrrr.
Yep a lot of pirates sailed out of Brizzle.
I believe pirates say aarrggghhh.......not 'ooh aarrgghhh' which is of course farmer speak.....
