Long stroke Rover V8 with nice wide bore exhaust manifolds. (Although I am obviously biased). But actually, there's something a little magical about the the sound of most V engines. (See Merlin, Lambo etc above) must be something to do with the regularly irregular exhaust pulses.

Or the scream of the 20k v10s

But then there's this, more of a whole body experience than a sound

Big lazy n/a V8, I'm not fussy which tbh... or sporty v-twin (I'm biased but my little SV with hot cams and big exhaust sounded glorious... Soft and rumbly til about 7000 and pretty mild mannered, then wailed its way to the 11000rpm limiter, but it was best on engine braking... Like riding a thunderclap )

Panos GTR-1, unfortunately good videos are few and far between so have the LMP version instead:

Auto Union V16

Alfa Romeo P3 at full throttle

I actually prefer the sound of RR Kestrel compared to a Merlin

Edit:
But the most evocative, for me, is the sound of the Gnome 50hp in the 1913 Blackburn Monoplane on a still summer's evening

Threads like this make me sad, because in ten years internal combustion engines won't be made anymore.

Many, but the Merlin, the Vulcan, and the C63 AMG are up there for best.
Particularly the C63 because I've driven one, the sudden 'bark' when I fired it up actually made me jump, and that wonderful noise once I got it onto the motorway and could open it up a bit.
But not as much as I'd like... 😀

Either a big lazy V Twin or a 955cc Triumph Triple at full chat - engine starting to wail like only a triple can - with the induction howl coming in over the top.

Epic 🙂

Or a big V8...

I so want a GranTurismo. If I hadn't gone and got a job that involves 12K miles of driving a year, I reckon it would be my next car.

Any love for the DC2 Type-R? 14 seconds on this the VTEC switches over. Loved mine.

a10 certainly qualifies as one of the best aircraft sounds, but more for the sound of death (erm life?) - if you hear it, thank your deity, you're still alive. it's when you can't hear it it's the problem... either they haven't fired yet, or you're going to die before the sound arrives.

there's an 8 rotor (V8 rotary) that sounds even better, but I couldn't find the vid (think it's in one of those compilations)

The 787B earlier gets my vote, heard one at Goodwood and it's such a strange and vicious sound it's unreal!

Not a fan of really loud engines like Dragsters and the 20K F1 engines really, too hard to hear what's going on.

This on the other hand I could listen to all day:

not all of us were wrong about top fuel 😉

can always tell a n00b at the pod... trying to get nice close up photos of the exhaust flames... the burnout is exciting, then they totally c**p themselves and get the shakiest photo ever and nearly drop the camera 🙂

that was me on either the first sub 5s run or the first 300kmh run on UK soil (or both) forget which. that was a while back.

I love the impact of a top fuel but the sound itself is rubbish. Bolts in a spindryer then raaarrrr and it's done. OK, it vibrates your soul while it's happening but it's like stopping and listening to Kerry King's actual guitar tone.

Also,

I loved the sound from this before it fell over.

2500bhp from a big block supercharged Hemi V8. Brutal.

Actually thinking about it, it's quite a similar engine note to the Bullitt Mustang, just angrier. No bloody turbos!

Pretty much anything V12 Ferrari for me. However the 6.3 in the FXX certainly left an impression on me after hearing it at Goodwood - glorious sounding thing! Nearly 800 horses at 8500rpm.. savage

As a bike racing fan I used to get told that I'd heard nothing until I heard a MV Augusta. After hearing one in the paddock at Stafford the other year I understood why people loved the noise they made. 😀

I've always thought the 3 cylinder 675 Triumphs make the best sound in the modern era,but MV contested the Supersport race at the TT the other year & ran a loud but beautiful sounding pipe. You could never run something so loud at a BSB round as it would fail scrutineering... 🙁

A Vulcan? Naa.
How about 4 Vulcans scrambling at RAF Finningley in September 1977 during the Queens Silver Jubilee Airshow.

A Merlin engine or multiples thereof.
A 500cc MV Agusta like what Ago used to ride.
