Over teh last few weeks I have seen an increased amount (4 lots today alone) of cops in Glasgow on push bikes and motorbikes standing on the pavements at the side of teh road pulling cards over. Am I missing something? Is there some sort of campaign going on. Sorry I might be wrong but 8 police in 1 day (yes they were all different, 4 together at one go the 2 moved up the road) should they not be going and catching real crimenals?? My car got broke into a stereo stole and they never done anything. A bit of a joke if you ask me!!!

It's an awareness thing for the title deciding old firm match this weekend. They expect crime to ramp up so this is what they are doing.

I do agree with you that there are things they would be better doing with their time but it's better than nothing..... just....

I think with all the support & advice you have had it would be good to keep the STW community up to date. Without compromising yourself of course

hi profile policing, reassuring members of the public that the police are carrying out high visibility patrols, pulling cars over that maybe are being used without insurance or being driven by criminals on route to steal your bike, or break into your house.
good job they are around to keep us safe if you ask me

Yup - more common complaint is "you never see the polis" - here is a complaint of you see too many!. If they are out there doing a high profile job stopping scrotes driving uninsured death traps I'm quite happy, having just taxed, serviced & insured my car. They might even turn up some stolen stereos while they're at it. 3 cheers for the cops!

I'm not sure if the HO hasn't issued a memo to "get out there" as in the last 3 weeks on my travels around the North West I have noticed a massive increase in visible police presence!
And that's not just in police cars either, yesterday evening on the few sections of road we covered on our night ride we met & chatted to 3 different officers on mountain bikes!
They were very impressed with the wattage output of our lights, but of course did say we ought to be careful not to blind motorists!
Though 1 did laugh when we said it was payback time for all the years of them blinding us 😛

In the end we all said it was nice to see them out and about

Good to see them out and about pulling people up and being visible. They can't be everywhere all the time but its nice to see they are in some places some of the time.

A bigger Police presence in Glasgow? It does seem a waste of manpower theres no crime there at all I heard, like London or Nottingham I heard etc etc etc . . . .

if you are ranting about them on the streets, go down to the court and see how many of them mess around there.

they have to pass a course to be allowed to cycle and some of the kit they get is pretty good, gortex etc

"Mess around" = "Giving evidence".

Failure to attend court when lawfully cited leaves that witness open to arrest on a warrant for contempt. This includes Police officers btw.

even a police sceptic like me thinks that's a really half-hearted rant. you didn't even bother to mention doughnuts or tea. assuming that they're pulling cars for a good reason, then this sounds like A Good Thing, in principle.

yeah but 4 of them in the space of 400 yards to do people not wearing seat belts. Is that not a bit extreme. All for the police patroling but why not use them to stop real criminals?

If drivers are breaking one law then they're more likely to be breaking more, so in that case they are stopping real criminals aren't they?

If I wanted to put police resources into securing a sudden, dramatic fall in crime in Scotland, I wouldn't start in Harris. I'd start with the Weegees, for obvious reasons.

Whilst I am of the weegie persuasion myself, sadly I must concur...

Glasgow is a heady mix of cosmopolitan chic across with Bam central/nedlam.

Xan, as aP says, they pull over people for minor crimes because it's one of the best ways of getting to have access to the car and their details to find more major crimes. Or dont you consider lack of tax/insurance/MOT, carrying drugs, speeding etc to be real crimes? IF it only took 4 cops it's hardly a massive drain on resources. On the way into liverpool there used to be (still is i hear) a stack of 4-6 cars in a layby, along with emissions and fuel testers (2-3 vans) at rush hour, narrowing a 3 lane road to 1 to sniff out just such "petty" crimes. Personally I'm glad they do, considering I've been hit by an uninsured driver and had to pay for the damage myself, the more they find the better and if that means I get stopped weekly I really dont give a damn!

I believe the point isn't particularly to hand out seatbelt tickets (although that's a good thing) but also it gives them an excuse to have a look at the car, run it through computer, sniff for alcohol/drugs etc.

Sorry - slipped into weegie speak (this is probably worthy of a seperate post)

Bam = (aka ned) a person of low moral values, often seen hanging about the chippy in possession of cheap tonic wine. Instantly recognisable by their tendency to adorn themselves in sportswear. A true "bam" will tuck their jogging trousers into their football socks, possibly to prevent any weapons from falling out at the ankles. The "bam" exists throughout the UK under a variety of different local nametags. A common thread is the inability to express ones-self without violence/disorderly conduct.

Nedlam - bastardisation of the word "Bedlam" referring to the infamous asylum from, I believe, the victorian era. Nowadays, often used to describe a chaotic, anarchic environment. For "nedlam", read "bedlam" only where the chaos is attributable to ned/bam type behaviour.

Hope this helps.

Yes - Buckfast is definitely a bit more upmarket. I think the MD20/20 in various garish colour/flavour combo is much more in vogue these days. Buckie appear to pricing themselves out of the market. Sanatogen is still available but not as common. What I particularly love to see is a wee offy with a chiller full of Buckie. Classssss. 🙄
