Me and the girlfriend get through loads of DVD Boxsets, some of my favourites:

The West Wing - girlfriend loved it despite not being into politics.
Dexter
Braking Bad
Six foot under
Entourage
House

As mentioned above Homeland is also excellent.

Spooks. The Killing (original)

If you want to watch something currently on the TV the OH loved the previous series of The Hour.

Spooks
Mad Men - I actually thought it would be a bit lame but from a guy's point of view it's quite entertaining looking at how things used to be. Fair bit of womanizing and boozing....

House is brilliant. But you have to like medical dramas. It's also very funny. Lawrie is genius.

I've not seen it yet, but The Wire does seem to be consistently raved about by pretty much everyone. Not heard anyone have a bad thing to say about it, ever.

I watched BSG recently and really enjoyed it, but whether your OH would get on with it is another matter. It's ostensibly a soap opera in space, could maybe pitch it on that basis? </outrageous gender stereotyping>

The OH and I are currently watching, and enjoying, Fringe at the moment. It's sort of X-Files: The Next Generation.

Best price I can find for The Wire is £45, at [url=www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001BBHG1S%3FSubscriptionId%3D035HRQETZS3GCGBJ3F82]Amazon[/url]. You can pick up series 1 for like £15 though.

Alternatively, LoveFilm carry it. Dunno about Netflix, I tried to check but their website is impenetrable unless you sign up.

Life on mars

Good call; brilliant little series.

Incidentally, if you fancy a superb mini-series that no-one's ever heard of, I can heartily recommend [url= http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Lost-Room-Julianna-Margulies/dp/B000RWDY6I ]The Lost Room[/url].

Breaking Bad is the best TV series I have seen and Charlie Brooker agrees so it must be true. It just keeps getting better as each season progresses. Writing, plot, characters, cinematography - all fantastic.

The Killing (we watched the US version)
The Wire is a must
Sleeper Cell
Jericho - terrible in every possible way, but still strangely addictive.

Life on Mars was about £15 for all episodes on iTunes.

Dexter is my fave of recent years.

Bizarrely Men Behaving Badly nearly always finds its way onto the DVD player in our house if there's nothing on telly and we have spare time at the same time (rare).

Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes also appear a bit.

Band of Brothers not so much - I think because my wife has always worked in hospitals and has witnessed plenty of blood, guts and carnage for real. So much so that she probably doesn't want to have to watch it again in her spare time.

On the other hand, I think Band of Brothers is the finest TV drama series of the last ten years.

Breaking Bad is I think a bit overrated, but still good. West Wing when it's at its best is pretty much unbeatable but it does go up and down.

I'm going to go with Firefly. But then I'm currently watching Dr Who so what do I know?

Generation Kill - from the same writers as the Wire...and it shows! Set in 2nd Iraq "war", 7 part series. Some of the actors were the actual characters being portrayed as part of the marine recon unit that the series follows. I only found that out by watching the extras afterwards!

More people based rather than overtly shooty.

Recently me and The Wife have been enjoying Blue Bloods and Boardwalk Empire.

I like True Blood too, but The Wife is not a fan of that one.

I'm going to go with Firefly.

I'm going to sit on the naughty step for failing to suggest that. One of the best sci-fi shows ever, and at 15 episodes it's not a huge investment.

I say it in every 'recommend me a boxset' thread, and came here to say it again.

The Shield.

Nobody ever says The Shield.

I caught the end of Game of Thrones the other night. Is it very violent?

It didn't seem it. I was thinking it might be all blood and nudity bit like Spartacus Blood & Sand, which the OH wouldn't put up with (nudity not a problem - blood and guts no chance), but if it's not like that then I might try and get her into GoT.

Life on Mars, another vote for Our Friends in the North, Edge of Darkness if you can get hold of it.

Or you could just settle down to Strike Back: Vengeance on Sky - a classy combination of violence and naked women.

The Wire - then we can all try and guess which one of the main characters your wife fancies by the time you're 3 episodes in 😉

Generation Kill is excellent.
Dexter is a good one too
Six Feet Under

We're just getting into Boardwalk Empire, may try and do The Soprano's with her again afterwards....

Mad Men is always good, if you tire of the storylines there's always the continuity to pick up on. 😀

Mongrels series 1

Look at these losers! Seriously, most people have to fly into a building before they're surrounded by this many virgins!

Ok, ok. You try telling a male crow from a female one! It's like playing Spot The Belgian at an international incest convention.

Nelson : Marion! For God's sake, you're going to die!
Marion : But then I will wake up in a magical fantasy world filled with virgins.
Nelson : You mean Games Workshop?

All of the above ...!
The Wire - compulsory
Firefly - is a hoot
Breaking Bad - brilliant
Deadwood - beat me to it
Southland ... just starting again on More4 ... if you like the Shield
Fringe - bit silly, but what the hey
The Secret Life of Us ... one for the wife, Aussie version of '30 something' ... might be stretching it/ showing my age 😉

Loads suggested which I've watched and enjoyed, so I'll also second Fringe, The Wire, Firefly, Deadwood, and Six Feet Under, but only the first couple of seasons.
I'll add Dead Like Me, which is brilliant, has a surprisingly potty-mouthed lead rôle, and Pushing Daisies; just the most fun series, great comic acting, and very funny. Both series sadly cancelled far too early. Like Firefly was.
Oh and for something along similar lines, but even more offbeat, try Wonderfalls; only ran for one season, but great fun.
Synopsis of Dead Like Me:

Pat McCurry <laraspal00@aol.com>
Meet Georgia Lass (who prefers to be called George). She is a young Seattle college dropout who is unhappy with life. She is always at odds with her mom, Joy. One day coming back from her temp job as a filing clerk, she is hit by the toliet seat of the re-entering Space Station Mir. Finding out she is now dead, she is recruited to become a grim reaper. As in life, she is a pain in the butt in death. She does not like the details of her job, and is always at loggerheads with her boss Rube. Her fellow grim reapers don't really take much of a liking to her either. She also learns grim reapers don't even get a free ride in death, as they must hold down regular jobs along with their death duties. -- IMDb Plot: Dead Like Me (2003–2004)

Some quotes:
George: This is where I felt it the first time. The universe was cocking the ****-with-me gun.

[George is in a good mood one morning and Roxie doesn't like it]
Roxy: How about a hot cup of shut the **** up?

Roxy: [to Mason who is curled up on a bench at the diner and looking out the window] What's wrong with you?
[Mason blinks in her direction, eyes bloodshot]
Roxy: Are you stoned?
Mason: [looking very pale and sickly] I've got illegals in my bottom...
[referring to the bag of cocaine that broke in his rectum at the airport]
Roxy: [looking at mason shaking her head] Why do you do this to yourself?
Mason: [hand on his forehead whimpering] I don't know.

The wife and I have recently enjoyed...

Todd and the book of pure evil!

Awesome, and only 20mins and episode so good to fit in before she starts working again in the evening (she's a newly qualified teacher).

Just got the green wing too for nostalgia.

My views:

The Wire: best thing on TV, ever.
6 Feet Under: 2nd best - & more touchy/feely
Bodies: 3rd - grim medical drama.
True Blood - excellent.
Peep Show, Spaced, MOdern Toss - great comedies
ER - enjoyed it on telly, not seen it all tho. Sopranos good also

Dexter, BSG, Game of Thrones - bored me.

Mad Men can not be beat for quality of writing. It is simply the most literary and literate thing on television, wherein every character is complex and every episode like a chapter in a great novel. And the visuals are amazing.

End of thread.

The Killing (we watched the US version)

No, no, and thrice no. The Danish original is the only acceptable one.

The Wire is the best thing that has ever been on TV. Ever ever ever. It's a cop show, a comedy, a political drama, a social documentary. Brilliant.
