Getting bored of Brexit so thought of something a bit more light hearted, if you could choose some things to have a national referendum on what would you choose?

Me, i'd go for

1) Should we fully legalise cannabis?

2) Should we abolish the royal family?

Keep it fun people.

Royal Family is a good one. A proper constitutional question.

Nuclear weapons might be another.

A better national anthem?

Should we declare independence for the south east of England and have it towed out into the mid-Atlantic?

1) Should the right to roam legislation be extended to the rest of UK?
2) Should airport security be returned to pre 9/11 levels?

A more interesting question than simply abolishing it - is what to replace it with?

I'd have a consultative referendum on making all referendums legally binding. And then do the opposite of whatever was decided.

1) Abandon GMT and move to CET.

2) All adults must take 4 yearly IQ tests and score >100 to retain their suffrage

3) Mandatory voting on pain of £1,000 fine or 3m in chokey.

4) Abandon penalty points on driving licences. Move to instant suspensions, no hardship pleading.

My libertarian mask may have slipped a little there

Of course if you linked 2) and 3), you could go and play dumb and not have to risk getting a £1k fine 🙂

I interpreted 2 and 3 together as an automatic fine for all stupid people, every time there was an election. Could clear the deficit?

Should we have a Swiss style system where we are required to hold a legally binding Referendum on any issue which has sufficient support (Swiss threshold is 50,000 registered voters so UK equivalent would be around 400,000 I think).

I'm no really for having referendums, more interested in issuing decrees. The OPs number 1 will do for starters! 😀

We should have a referendum on banning referendums.

Also on spelling:
Option 1 - referendums
Option 2 - referenda

[quote=Stoner ]2) All adults must take 4 yearly IQ tests and score >100 to retain their suffrage

I presume you're working on the theory that most people think their IQ is >100?

4) Abandon penalty points on driving licences. Move to instant suspensions, no hardship pleading.

So long as you don't split those questions, because I'm fairly confident that abandoning penalty points without suspensions instead would get a handy majority.

Personally I'm struggling to think of things where the majority of people in this country are likely to vote the same way as me.

Firstly, I'd ban newspapers and online media from publishing comment, their remit would be only to report facts, without error or omission.

Secondly, I'd ask the public whether they'd rather spend £XXXBn on shooty-boom submarines, or have cheaper public services and infrastructure.

I'd then hold a referendum on whether to establish a moratorium on text vote television.

Should those not using indicators(especially at roundabouts) be flogged to within an inch of their lives.
