Budget?

If he hasn't got one already, a DS (now DSi) is usually a winner..

you would have just given him money on his birthday?

don't you know what things your own kid likes to do?

Bought my nephew a swiss army knife for his 9th birthday, and chucked a few plasters in the box with it. He loved it. (Worth the glares from his mother).

How much time do you spend with your son?

Ok a new bike or PS3 or Xbox360, laptop, watch, gizmo gadget, something fun,
radio controlled car that you build -you might end up doing the building, PSP portable playstation thing, Wii?

Saxa mo fone?

Lego was always a winner with our kids and game consoles.

yep, lego and bikes. You could also try model kits or there's loads of experimentation boxes out there which are good fun. Messing around with chemicals and physics is what boys like.
