We've never been to Cardiff, but it's an hour away from where we are staying and it's been floated as a Plan B if it rains again tomorrow.
Any suggestions for museums, galleries, twee shops and cafes etc
Lots of cafes generally. The nice Victorian arcades are near the Castle, the Castle itself is decent, the market is quite cool, the museum is good for a relatively small city but it might not be fully open currently not sure. Bute park is nice for a walk along the river - it'll rain, but the path is tarmac. As well as the main big museum there's a 'Cardiff Story' museum in the old library, I quite enjoyed that. The Museum of Welsh Life is excellent as an outdoor museum with old buildings etc. It's nice to walk around even in the rain, but it will still be raining.
Big shopping centre near the Museum of Cardiff. Popped in there too, filled an hour in pouring rain. The Market was good.
We stayed in Cardiff Bay for two nights last week at the end of two weeks touring Wales as t was chucking it down. Lots of restaurants in the Bay, plus an entertainment complex - went to the cinema one night. Did Cardiff centre on day two via the bus.
Barry is down the road if you just pop in to see how run down it is. Even Nessa's favourite chippy is closed. Fish chips and peas will set you back £15 each at the other chippys. At least the beach was clean as it's swept daily. We called in on the way to Cardiff Bay. Parked for free next to the rear of the 'fun fair'.
Yeah there is a lot of indoor shopping and it's not bad if you like that sort of thing. I don't care for the Bay much really unless you are having lunch or dinner.
The Bay was like Salford Quays TBH (which I know well being localish), but the Premier Inn was cheap for two nights, near some 'food' and a 10 minute bus ride into Cardiff. Also had secure parking for £22 for two days, essential with a van full of camping gear.
The National Museum of Wales in the centre of Cardiff is good. If you or some of your team like shopping then Cardiff has lots of those in arcades modern and old.
Also St. Fagans Museum of Welsh Life on the outskirts has a large indoor museum and and outdoors section with historical buildings from across Wales and a some parkland and an Elizabethan mansion all on one site and free entry. Great day out for all weathers.

Big Pit is quite good if they are no longer on strike (seriously this was happening recently). Roman museum in Caerleon is also worth a visit but best combined with a visit to the roman baths, amphitheatre and fort to make a half day of history stuff.
