MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Due to work and money restrictions this years summer holiday is a week camping at Robin Hoods Bay. I spent 3 years down near Bridlington so have a few ideas but what would you lot recommend? Don't want to do a massive amount of driving but we'll probably go to York for one day so happy to travel that kind of distance. Kids are 8 and 13 and fairly easy to please. Places to go for dinner near RHB would be good too.
We were at Robins Hoods Bay earlier this year and it has gotten very busy. Victoria Hotel and Flyingdales pubs are always popular. We couldn't even get booked in at either of these places this year and would have needed to book before we went on holiday.
IF you're taking the bikes the Cinder track will get you along the coast relatively easily.

North Yorks Moors railway from Whitby to Pickering: Goathland station was used in Harry Potter as Hogsheade station and Pickering has a castle which all kids love, don't they?
Your kids might be a bit old for Old Jack's Boat on CBeebies, but it was filmed in Staithes which is a quaint little fishing village not far away and home of a young Captain Cook.
A day at Flamingo Land is fun and if you look around you can get a family ticket at half price (usually on local radio stations and the like) - Stray FM in Harrogate did that exact deal this morning but it will have sold out by now.
If you haven't been for a while you will be very surprised at how good it is now (if you ignore the Geordies in vests and tattoos).
And a day trip to Filey Brig and go rock-pooling (but watch the tide)!

Whitby is a good spot for fossil hunting. The beach at Boggle Hole at south end of RHB is good for ammonites, plants and shellfish, north to Runswick Bay and Staithes for more. Whitby museum has some excellent stuff.
We went for our honeymoon (we were very poor) and go back for our anniversary every year (because we're actually 80 years old, not in our late twenties). Our favourite things are-
North York Moors Railway - http://www.nymr.co.uk/ I'd just ride to Goathland, with a stop in Grosmont for an hour or two to look at the engine shed and the village. The Art Cafe there is really lovely.
Potter around Staithes and the art galleries.
Bike ride on the Cinder Trail from Robin Hood's Bay to Whitby.
Walk on the moors, possibly around the Hole of Horcum
An hour or two in the amusements in the evening, mostly on the 2p machines.
Pottering about Whitby itself - it's a nice town. Henrietta Street is lovely.
Mountain biking in Dalby Forest.
A trip on the small Endeavour replica, it's only about £3.
Most importantly the Museum of Victorian Inventions is amazing. It's a bloke's collection in his house and by appointment he'll do you a tour. It really is great, I can't recommend it enough even if the website is a bit rough!

I grew up there.
-Walk on the moors? Take a bus/train to Grosmont and walk up to Beck Hole. The pub is owned by a family friend and is fantastic. Food is limited.
-Crabbing off Whitby pier?
-Charter a fishing boat
-There's a surf school on Whitby beach now. Better surf down Sandsend
-Take your BMX to the skatepark on West Cliff
-Raw til 4? Ask a local
-Staithes is good for a visit. Runswick Bay is usually quieter than Robin Hood's Bay
- +1 for flamingo land
- North York Moors steam train
- Whitby Abbey
- Rievaulx Abbey
- Fountains Abbey
- Dalby Forest
- Biking on NYM
- +1 for Whitby Museum. Lots of bizarre stuff in there. Make sure to see the Hand of Glory
- Avoid the pubs in Goathland. They're crap, especially the Goathland Hotel (from Heartbeat...)
Whitby is a good spot for fossil hunting.
Until the newspaper headline, "Man take hammer to cliff and ends up with church and abbey on head." 🙂
Scarborough Castle
Scarborough Sealife Centre (Not been for a few years)
Pickering - sneak a look in at Big Bear Bikes.
If you do York, the Park and Rides are a good idea, city centre car parks get full and cost a packet.
Lovely views up at Sutton Bank and a bike shop to be surprised at when the other half notices.
Saw the museum but don't think kids are allowed in. Probably not taking bikes.

in all seriousness, please don't take a hammer. If the fossils are loose (i.e. not embedded in the land) they're fair game. Please don't take them out of the rock formations (e.g. cliffs) though.
Kids are allowed in the museum 😀
We're down in The Bay for a fortnight from the 11th July. This will be the 9th year we've spent the summer hols there and we go again and again as we think it's fab for relaxing and exploring.
It can be busy but we're usually there before the English schools break up so it's not been that busy. There's loads to do in the area so all depends what you want out of the holiday. There's all the attractions around and further away as already mentioned above but for us and the kids and dogs just exploring around the area just comes out tops.
When the tide is out there's rockpools to be explored and trying to find the elusive Velvet Swimming Crab - completely mentalist crab that's well up for a fight! There's fossils aplenty as mentioned, just lying about, just need to tune into looking for them. Walk along beach or cliff to Boggle Hole (and beyond, nice bit of sandy beach just past Boggle Hole and more fossils and rockpools beyond that, most folks just go as far as Boggle Hole but there's more to explore beyond there. Boggle Hole youth hostel now serves a decent range of food (and beer) so worth a stop.
In the other direction from Robin Hoods Bay there's the shipwreck of the SARB-J around the headland, though it's getting a bit busted up now but excellent to see. Can do the cliff walk from Robin Hoods Bay to Whitby for fish and chips (we prefer Hadleys, there's other chippies too which other folks prefer).
Not far away is Falling Foss tea garden, perfect for bacon baps and cream scones and other snacks. Nice litle walks from there too.
Smugglers and Bramblewick do good meals in Robin Hoods Bay, and the Mariondale chippy is ace. Ye Dolphin does good food (recommend the mutton curry or steak and ale pie) and it has a folk night on Friday nights for some good songs and banter.
We always pay Scarborough a visit for the amusements in the South Bay and a wander about, and the North Bay has Peasholm Park and the attractions near the open air theatre which include a sky trail climbing thing which the kids love, and a shed that sells beer that I love.
Whitby is good too for an explore, crabbing in the harbour near the bridge, fish and chips, trip on the steam train, walk up the steps to the abbey.
Our hols usually consist of explore the rockpools/beach/fossil hunting, ice cream, fish and chips, beer with the odd foray out to Scarborough/Whitby/Falling Foss - I've no desire to go driving any big distances to anywhere and there's plenty to keep us occupied right there. Each to their own though.
Go Ape in Dalby forest for the kids? You can potter in the bike shop nearby.
...all the above plus the Mugrave Estate and Mulgrave Castle
And check out the Dalehouse pub in the little valley that leads down to Staithes - Bombadier £1.50 a pint. My daughter who's worked in various london pubs couldn't get over the fact she was drinking a 75p half (this year.)
The Dracula Experience in Whitby. It's just soo bad! It really is utterly dreadful, but hilarious as a result. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to do either
Whitby is a good spot for fossil hunting
But Port Mulgrave up the coast is much better.
Go to Whitby and I'd recommend lunch at Mister Chips, it's our fav chippy and boasts praise from the old Top Gear guys.
You can easily spend a couple of days in Scarborough without spending much. We love it there.
Ohh, and if anyone is interested in war there are mock naval battles in Peasholme Park (Scarborough).

Hmmmm pies!
As above, Mr Chips is the best chip shop.
Find a stick.
Sharpen it.
Has anyone mentioned goth spotting?
Marked. I need to take my kids fossil hunting.
Go to Saltburn and see if you can get trapped under the cliffs by the tide.
It's a very popular thing for visitors to the area to do. 😉
Bookmarked. Me and the wife are off to Staithes later this month, with the 8 year old nephew.
Peasholme looks a goer. Just need to talk the wife into it. 8)
Someone mentioned a charter fishing boat, plenty will take you out for a couple of hours Macky bashing on an evening if you don't want an all day trip.
