I'm probably going to get a sim-free smartphone. Something touchscreen, capacitive screen, not an iPhone - if I were staying in the UK I'd go for HTC Legend or Desire, but they only work on European 3G, not US or Canadian. 🙁 👿
Sooo... what to do? Nexus One might be the obvious choice, although it's not quite as desirable as a Desire. Are there any other alternatives? Or should I just give in and go with either the Googlephone or the Applefone? 🙁

Erm......wait until you get to the USA and buy a phone there? Warranty, known support etc.
