Im not a huge whisky drinker but my MD likes a bit.

Had a great year at work this year and and got elected to the board. He has been my mentor since i joined and i wanted to get him something decent to show my appreciation.

Ideas around the £50-£100 mark please

Aldi had some 24 year old single malt on offer recently - link - similar to an offer from a year ago that got good reviews.

CFH, where from?

Saw it in the supermarket for ~£45 the other week. Almost bought some, but refrained for an unknown reason.

Finding out what he likes would be a good first step. Imagine posting "recommend me a bike" on The Other Side with no other information. It'd be no good us recommending the whisky equivalent of an Orange 5 and then finding out that your MD is a roadie.

Scapa 12 ~£100, a - the 12 yo is better and b - the 12yo was produced before the distillery was mothballed for a couple of years and is now in very finite supply.
If your MD is a big whisky fan, he'll get it.

Talisker 18 is simply fantastic. Springbank 15 also a favourite.

Caol Ila

That's exactly what I opened the thread to suggest but it was for a joke; apparently it tastes of seaweed.

Whiskey is a very personal thing so I'd +1 for asking him what he likes instead of splashing £100 on something he may hate.

yeah im a kiss arse , but its just a gesture of thanks - Like the gift membership idea

Cant stand whiskey so i didn't think it would be that difficult I know he has a collection at home as i have seen the bottles.

Thought they would just be all subtly different

Thanks for all the help though.

Suntory Distilleries:

Hibiki 17 much much better than the Hibiki 12

Yamazaki 10 (now discontiued) and 12 both very good.

Yamazaki 12 Sherry Cask - I haven't tried this but it was recently voted best whisky in the world apparently.

Have you seen what's happened to the prices thanks to Jim Murray 😉

There's a hint of seaweed, but it's a much more subtle flavour than, for example, Laphroaig, and it's peat that's the dominant flavour there.
I still have some left in a bottle I bought some years ago, it's their Vintage version. It's a damn fine whiskey, and if the OP's MD is at all appreciative of fine distilling, he'll appreciate a bottle.
I'd be thrilled if someone gave me a bottle.
I do have a bottle of Yamazaki Distiller's Reserve, given to me for my 60th birthday, which I'm yet to open.

How about a gift membership to The Scotch Malt Whisky Society?

It's a little over your budget, but it's a little more involving and thoughtful than just a bottle?

My brothers in it, and i went to one of the tastings, so it could be win win for you? 😀

Find out what he likes, look on a whiskey taste map, see what's nearby or in the vicinity of his "collection"

Buy that.

Abunadh (Aberlour 60% cask strength)
Different, but not ostentatious/w4nky
and about £43 if you can find a Booths, but not much different online

Plus, as a Yorkshireman, once diluted to a drinkable strength (to release the oils etc), you actually get a lot of bang for your buck

If he has a whisky colllection. Get him a laphroaig quarter cask. must be the quarter cask instead of regular. not uncommon but damn good.

One of my favourites. Great if he likes the Islay style.

Mmm, this is very good too.

But still - seaweed FFS. Not that I'd know firsthand, of course, as I have a penchant for port instead. My friends that own or have owned it are, shall we say, divided by that particular flavour.

I'd be thrilled if someone gave me a bottle.

Then my joke would've been lost on you and I would consider myself a failure...
