Probably a can of worms on here but I'm after a remote control car for my 8 year old son.
Wants to use it outside but something not stupid fast will give us greater scope and make sure he doesn't loose it in the first river we see.
Something that can have spare battery packs would be a bonus to extend playtime.
I know there's a few RC connoisseurs in these parts.

If you can stretch to 150 Great value are the ECX cars like this one https://www.modelsport.co.uk/ecx-1-10-2wd-circuit-brushed-lipo-white-blue-rtr-int/rc-car-products/406640 I got the older one for my boy and its been excellent.
this one has a Lipo battery comes with all the bits you need and ready to run. An extra battery is around £30 but essential as the 1800 it comes with lasts 5 minutes max a 4000 will go for 25mins or so..

I bought my son a tamiya hornet for xmas when he was 8, he enjoyed helping build it up as well. Quick enough, only downside is the bodyshells arent the most durable, we are on the third one now, only £15 each so not too bad really.

I wanted one we could build together but most just seem to want to sell you the built up models.
I think HPI were a pretty solid brand.

Could stretch to £150 or get others to buy extras like batteries etc which would work well.
Might have to check with him what sort of style he wants as there's a fair amount to choose from!

Having just been through this for a four year old try maverick ion range. Bit to fast for mine but 8 should be fine.ecx look good as well
I would advise either getting something like a Nikko to start with as they aren't really fast enough to break and you can get spare batteries or get something from tamiya/HPI/Traxxas etc which are more money but you will never be stuck unable to get parts. Go to you LHS and see what they sell and stock spares for.
Buy the cheapest one possible because if it's anything like all the other remote control cars I know of it will be left to gather dust after a week or two.
i asked the same thing a good few years back, my boy may have been about that age then. upon advice i went for a tamiya mad bull with electric motor. damn good call.
i was skeptical that it would be any good after years of the boy having cheap r/c cars from toys r us but my word i was wrong the thing is demon. it was also a hoot building it on boxing day.
if you go down the electric route i recommend buying a few sets of batteries as you don't get that long on a set especially if like me you drive it flat stick and wheels spinning.
Went through the same scenario 2 years ago for Xmas with 10year old son.
Top tip - buy 2!!!! One each. Its loads more fun than doing it on your own.
I ended up with an Hpi racing Maverick Strada buggy and a truggy too. Also bought a fast charger and 3 spare batteries. The cars are easy to fix when you crash them (you will) - spares are easy to find.

We had a good year out of them before he moved on to other interests - they are currently sat in the garage. And up for sale if anyone wanted the complete kit - ready to go with a bunch of spare bits too.
