MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Just had my 50th and have been given lots of £££££s that my wife says I must spend on me. Have fancied a remote car for a while but looking towards a slower one (Landy Defender) over a Mental quick one so my girls can use it too - any recommendations?
Traxxas are amazing but maybe a bit quick for what you want
I have a Taxxas Revo that I converted from Nitro to brushless as it was just too noisy for the area I want to use it in.
I actually got more fun out of building it than driving as the thing is so ludicrously fast and capable it is just boring to use slow.
Then when it is that fast, it is on the verge of serious damage in a crash and in need of a huge space to play with.
I also had a Axial Wraith rock crawler come fast ish thing. This was much more fun in hindsight but I sold it foolishly.
Depending on how much lots of ££££ is, I'd be temped by something scale moddel ish or a Traxxas Summit and a brushless convertion to give the best of both worlds.

Here endeth thread
That Defender is bloody amazing! Remote lockable diffs; that's more than a lot of full-size 4x4's have!
That Traxxax Defender is exactly the vehicle I had been looking at (and have just about the £££££ needed) but just wanted to check to see if there was anything else I should be considering.
Its got cruise control?!?
I am just struggling with the concept of spending £500 on a toy (but I have wanted one for ages and I have my wife's backing)!
That Defender is awesome!!!!
How many ££££s?
😆
I bought a Tamiya Blackfoot for the reasons you have. I didn't want to spend much more to be honest as it is just a toy at the end of the day.
You had me at "remote locking diffs". 😳
Ordered (the Traxxax Defender) - I shall report back once I have it in my hands and operational 🙂
😀
NICE!!
Oh watching this thread with great envy! 🙂
@johndoh
Are we to expect an unboxing thread, just to make everyone more envious?
Gutted that I can't use it straight away though - no-one had the battery pack required (it doesn't come with one) so have to wait for it to come back in stock. I did try to buy the bits separately but I couldn't find the correctly rated pack with the Traxxax connectors anywhere! I am going to be very frustrated tomorrow when it is sat there looking at me...
I shall post pictures 🙂
Just change the connectors for some more standard one's. Or does anyone sell a convertor?
THat Landy is chuffing awesome....
WANT!
I've a traxxas revo nitro car..super fast, crazy fun, but as pointed out up there... It's too fast for 'pootling around the garden' and when it crashes, it costs.....
I REALLY can't justify that Landy.
Can i???
DrP

I could, but for the sake of getting it right first time I have just opted to wait it out and get the matched kit from the suppliers of the vehicle 🙂
That's marvellous and about as close as I'll get to owning a defender..
Properly tempted!
That`s a belter, if only I had some spare coin sat around, enjoy 🙂
Interesting thread.
I've been given two 1980s vintage Tamiya models that a mate found in his attic. I'll post them up at some point this weekend for discussion.

I never do and I was pleasantly surprised that my wife insisted on me getting a pretty significant amount of ££££s for my birthday (my brother is quite comfortably off and he wanted to treat me the same as he did our other brother on his 50th - despite me saying I would like him to put it into our kids' Uni savings accounts). So I thought what the hell, you're only 50 once...
I was 50 three weeks back and got £350 off various family members to treat myself to something like this, put it in a cup on the side and I have dipped into it rather than visit the hole in the wall ,alas there was £25 in it this morning that will be gone tonight after a few pints!! Always happens 🙂
^^^ Which is exactly why I thought 'stuff this' and bought it before it disappeared somewhere else.
Yep, going to feel like I`m buying my own present!!
By god that's a stonking toy johndoh.
I've just done a similar thing, put birthday money from the m-i-l towards a secondhand Vaterra Slickrock- my first ever rc car- but that Defender looks absolutely awesome in comparison- I hope you really enjoy it.
It's great when you have the opportunity to have a totally guilt-free wee splurge on something completely unnecessary but fun- you don't get too many chances when you're part of a family.

Exactly - but I did still choose something my little girls (they are 8) can enjoy with me 🙂
By god that's a stonking toy johndoh.
Thank you 🙂
Ah wow, blimey so you dont have to make it at all then? Does look very nice!! What controller did you go for?
Nope - it works straight out of the box and comes with a matched controller with buttons and switches for high/low gearing, diff lock (front only or full lock), cruise control etc 🙂
I do like that Landrover, but as an ex RC racer it has two problems for me
1 It comes ready assembled. I like to build my own.
2 Steer wheel controller. I was brought up on twin stick as we're most British racers and I'd struggle to adapt
I'd still like one though.
couldn't find the correctly rated pack with the Traxxax connectors anywhere!
Rip em off and solder your own on. 5 minute job.
Battery pack being delivered between 9.36am and 10.35am....
It feels like Christmas.
I took my nitro Revo 3.3 to rag around the beach yesterday afternoon...
My hands are cut up, it lasted about 15 minutes before the gearbox shifter fannied up, and it was noisy...
The noise was fun, but 'leccy is the way to go...
I REALLY want one of these defenders - the slow speed would be idea for my lad, and we've some brilliant rocks nearby we could spend hours driving over...
Hmm...
I'll wait a few months... £400 will be my 'buy it now' price!
DrP
Pete - most (i.e early all) cars nowadays are wheel controller..
It's actually much more intuative...
I think i'll havea go at converting my nitro revo to brushless first - I reckon a few £100 would get ol's smokey joe running on sparks!
DrP
I'll wait a few months... £400 will be my 'buy it now' price!
I have seen it at £470 but they didn't have it in stock.
the slow speed would be idea for my lad,
Which is another reason I wanted it - my girls will have fun with it too. Last night they got all their RC things out (impatience at not being able to use it) - little 'copters, a cheapo 4x4, 'floating' fairies etc 🙂
That's wicked!
Didn't realise I even wanted an RC car till I saw that. The diff locks are very cool.
Red light on the charger flashing away... Waiting for it to go green.
👿
Is it ready yet?!?!? Is it ready yet?!?!? Is it ready yet?!?!?
what do people do with high end RC cars apart from rag them round the beach / field? and maybe race them.
doesn't it get boring pretty quick? as a kid I reckon it would be fun but as a an adult I'm not so sure.
No it's not! No it's not! No it's not! Bloody battery (a huge 5000mah LiPo) is taking an age to charg)! Everyone in the office is *nearly* as impatient as me. We're building a circuit for it at lunchtime....
I'd been toying with buying one a while ago, but decided just to revive the old one I had when I was a kid instead.
New battery, charger and speed controller (about £25 all in). Used it for a couple of weeks and it's sat doing nothing since. Glad I resisted the more expensive options.
</parade_rain>
Still, the OPs looks ace 🙂
Axial wraith/derivatives is where it's at if you like building/modding/customising, imho. That Traxxas thing looks bloody impressive though; jealous; it'll be a lot of fun...
Pete - most (i.e early all) cars nowadays are wheel controller
At the high end there's still loads of people using stick. Last time I raced was about 5 years ago and it was about 80% of drivers on twin stick.
I was the only one using an FM transmitter though, everyone else was on 2.4ghz. 🙂
I'd got a really high end FM set of eBay for peanuts. Nothing wrong with it, worked exactly like everyone else's 2.4ghz kit, it just wasn't fashionable.
It's a British thing. We love twin stick.
I could probably have a toy like that Landy and get used to it but I couldn't race with one.
You certainly couldn't race it - waaaaay too slow for that. They do have a big scene in the US for Rock Crawler competitions though - you can even change settings on the car to make it pass certain competition criteria (ie, some down't allow the use of reverse).
Yeah. I know. I was talking about the controller style, not the car itself.
I've raced RC cars on and off since about 1984. My last stint was 1/10 scale touring cars.
I'll 'fess up to being a real YouTube RC geek!
The crawling videos are cool.. trouble is, this sort of thing is more fun if there's a few of you driving..are there clubs near you Jon?
DrP
I would literally be cautiously enthusiastic for a STW crawling club; I don't know if there's anything active in the UK at the moment, but the extra level of sorting g that STW provides means there would always be loads in common with other enthusiasts
OMGOMGOMG
Great fun - unfortunately I have had to pack it up as I am about to rush off to see Dunkirk at Bradford Imax!
brakes: RC Racing is quite a large thing, national series for all different scales etc, I race at club meetings twice a week, sometimes three. Got a large event on Sunday on the tarmac track at Carlisle (hoping weather holds!). I do occasionally take my buggy for a general thrash but that is normally a bit boring after a while, much better racing around with others for fun/actual races
It's CERTAINLY more fun with more vehicles than just your own on the go; whether that be on the highly regulated racing circuit or just bashing around with mates. Hence my cautious suggestion above.
STW crawling club
What was that? Oh Rock crawling, as you were.
I've always wanted a [s]good[/s] decent toy RC car, always had crap ones when I was kid because I didn't fancy building up from a kit. Wish I'd had a Lunchbox though, still fancy one of them.
If I won the lottery I'd happily spaff the cash on a few good ones and race them round the grounds.
I have one of these
It's massive and mentally quick, and because of the size of it you can drive it across pretty much anything. It needs a proper exhaust on it but it's antisocial enough as it is. I've also got a couple of Lipo's, including an Annsman running an 8s. If you hold it off the ground and give it some throttle it'll happily blow the tyres off the rims.
I'm thinking of selling the Losi as it's just too big to use anywhere. Once sold I think I'll be having one of those Defenders
Would quite like to get the youngest into racing them, there's a race meet in Tonbridge on Sunday and I think she'd like the Mini series they do. Well, I know I would...
I'll 'fess up to being a real YouTube RC geek!
Me too 🙂
I've always been a big fan of RC cars but haven't owned one for a while.
After reading this thread that is going to change prompto...
Well I took it out yesterday and (after fighting my two little girls off) I put it through its paces - it is amazing, drives so well and all but the steepest (ie, when gravity takes over) inclines are drivable. I took it over some really rough stuff and the only time it got stuck was when it grounded when straddling big roots.
And with a 5000mah lipo power pack, it lasted about 1hr 30 mins too so no having to carry a dead car back home afterwards.
1hr 30? That's mental, I've got a similar lipo in one of my cars and I'm lucky if I see 15 minutes out of it. Assuming it's not running hard if you're mainly doing rock crawling with it?
As much as I love Lipo's, they do scare me a bit after one went bang whilst charging. Thankfully it was only a 1s, although it left a bit of a crater in the worktop...
As much as I love Lipo's, they do scare me a bit after one went bang whilst charging.
:-O
I might start charging mine in the garage then! I had heard they can do that sometimes.
But yes - as it's crawling it doesn't use anything like the same power as a fast car.
Is yours in a hard case, or a soft case one? I've had both and I've never had issues with a hard case. Soft case...well, not so much. If charging inside I'd recommend getting one of those charging bags. Seriously, they go off with a proper bang - have a look at the youtube footage of them...
It's a hard case - and I am getting a charging bag!
dlr - Where is your home track? You will know Chris Mitchell & Co I presume.
Me and my son got ourselves pretty competitive on minis (Mo5) for a season but his interest died. Still have an older Xray setup, controller, lipo charger, and all the other tools etc etc. Its all boxed up for if I get interested myself again.
John - that defender looks properly awesome!
I keep watching videos of them...it's only the lack of stock preventing me click 'buy'..the wife'll go mad, but they sure look fun!
Hmm...
REally you need a group of 'crawlers' to have proper fun, right?
DrP
Hmm, a group of grown men walking around the woods while twiddling their joysticks. Make it even more fun and do it at night and upgrade them with led lights.
It wouldn't be the coolest activity I have ever seen but as long as you guys are enjoying your toy cars (As my wife used to call them).
That's the spirit...
DrP
There's something about the crawlers and especially scale trucks, which the defender is sort of, that appeals to me much more the just blatting the loud stick and powering over / through / off things, as my revo does now.
Probably explains why it doesn't get used.
Might sell it and look towards a more dare I say it - grown up rc car.
Annoyingly, I had a wraith that I upgraded and got running very nicely, then sold it. Doh.
