I recently saw a pix of a lass dress up at a wedding looking fed-up, and not quite like her female counter-parts, with the trail calling, but instead was stuck listening to girly cr@p.

This I soooo... relate too! I'd sooner be eating dirt than wedding cake. I wondered if it's this just me who thinks we are just wired up different?

P.S If anyone can remember the ad please put up a link, I want to print out a copy 😉

Eh?
Riding a bike doesn't make you different, you gain no super powers, it's just riding a bike.

Wired up different? please...

I certainly don't feel any different to other women, I like pink, handbags and cake.

However, I don't mind going out into the wilds, getting a tad muddy, having my hair blown about and looking like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards, being covered in the odd bruise or riding in winter, when its, cold, wet and miserable.

Also I have this bad habit of seeing trails everywhere, or steps and just wanting to ride down them.

Chaps - Can I just say that the above comments aren't doing much to encourage the ladies to join in with STW.

Ducks and runs away.

what Bunnyhop said + a lot
OP I think [ stereotypically] female MTB ers probably are a bit different/exceptional or rare just like non testosterone fuelled male MTB ers ...both obviously thin on the ground but they are out there.

The girls I bike with are pretty much the same as girls I've met elsewhere, but they just happen to like biking. Much like the blokes I've cycled with too.

If I were making any recommendation to encourage more women to cycle, I'd simply say that it helps you get fitter, it's a great way of seeing the outdoors and of course it's a good way of meeting outdoorsy folk.

I'm with bunnyhop I'm afraid. I think I am normal(ish). Most of my female friends think I'm mad though and can't think of anything worse. I also get funny looks when I don't spend £100 on new clothes to 'go out in' but then spend £60 on shorts or a new helmet. But, I also like handbags, chocolate and wine so it's all ok 🙂

I think it's great that girls want to ride bikes - it's a bloke dominated thing that should be more equal.
Not all girls are into pink though - my other half doesn't do biking, but she does love the outdoors (and that isn't the bit of pavement between John Lewis and Monsoon).

More girls on the trails is what we need

Nah I understand what you are saying, I don't love mtbs but don't have a clue or ever wear make up and certainly never wear heels. My handbag is a howies canvas one and there is nothing I want to do less than shop, i am also not addicted to chocolate to be fair I could leave it out .. but crisp and cheese now you are talking. I have never painted my nails, dislike spa days, beach lying around holidays and seriously can't stand facials..there you go! Love my MTB and all things sport, outdoors, rucksacks and merrell trainers!!!!

You'd easily forget the presence of females on STW given the amount of willy waving on forums here!

I think there's something special about women on bikes, it's unjustifiably unusual. It can be intimidating entering a sport people are so nerdy about, particularly when it's male dominated as we tend to bang on about minutia. I'd love MTB to be more inclusive, as rock climbing is becoming.

Recently Mrs Shake started riding, I'm well chuffed. It's nice following her on the singletrack 😉

Ha, My mates think I'm mad as I try to find women into biking...while they, who are married, go biking to get away from their other halves and out of the house! 🙂
I'd rather be single than have to go shopping and sit about watching tele, getting fat!
Stay fit and fast!

as an old goth I discovered I know a lot more about wearing make up than most ladies, so it all balances out in the great scheme of things 😆

I hate pink and I hate that loads of womens cycling clothing is pink, or lilac, or baby blue.
Ergh its like barbie vomit.

Turn on/off if the MTB gal is better than you? Had this discussion recently and most said they would feel emasculated .... 😯

my mrs is fairly quick. if i ride a trail centre on my own i can ride past folk all day long and get nothing but a cheery hello but if my mrs is with me loads of blokes murder themselfs not to get passed. weird.

I'm not too fussed about pink clothing, but I would like to see stuff like a pink Crank Brothers multi tool and a pink Lezyne mini pump - mainly to stop my other half nicking my stuff. As it is I think I'm going to have to invest in some "Hello Kitty" stickers... 😉

Lots of girls at the bike park here in Whistler. Not all of them wear pink. Something strangely alluring about girls in body armour and on a big bike 😆

I found that as I got more into mountainbiking that I have actually grown to love the colour pink. I think it's something to do with wanting to still look like a girl even when a bit bruised and muddy.

On the nail polish front... I find that Rimmel 'lasting finish' stuff survives pretty well even when changing tyres/fixing stuff.

im exactly the same Lizzz, hated pink for many years, now im a total convert. its the same whether im walking my big manly german shepherd, on my motorbike or on my mtb. My road bike is a pretty red, so girly enough 🙂

I'm indifferent about pink but I do find it frustrating that most women's MTB clothing is pink, baby blue or white! I mean WTF who thought white for MTB clothing was a good idea. My really nice Mavic MTB shoes are more a dusty grey most of the time. I do love my Harlot camo shorts though 😉

What makes a MTB gal different from other women?

1) they demand you keep the bikes inside the house nice and dry and warm and snuggly, none of this "get that dirty thing out my house!" malarky

2) they understand when you spend daunting amounts of money on bike stuff and they dont complain as half of it will end up theirs

3) they demand you get out on the bikes the moment the sun pokes out from behind a cloud.

4) they're fitter and healthier than their friends who's idea of exercise is parking further away from the carpark ticket machine on a shopping trip.

5) ladies on bikes look awesome, especially when blasting along with a massive grin on their faces.

on the subject of it being a turn-off if the lady is faster/fitter or generally better than you on a bike.... only an insecure beast of a man would find that a turn off surely? i like mrsconsequence to enjoy whatever she's doing and the more she improves the more fun she has = awesome.

See, Phil, reading that makes me wonder whether I should trade in my current partner for an mtbing one...

On the one hand it's great to have seperate hobbies, but on the other hand it'd be nice to share one of the things I love the most...

I'd suggest that they're mostly sad, insecure types then... I love that Mrs Clubber is a far more naturally talented athlete than me.

Sporty women are fantastic.

Phil as a counter to that... much the same as with blokes... roadie women are on average fitter than mtb women.

as long as they're enjoying themselves on a bike then the worlds a happier place 🙂 if i was a roadie then i'd probably be chatting about how road riding ladies are much better than mtb.

careful with the photos now children!

men posting pics of female riders risks the kinda comments that will get the thread closed, as will rachel posting pictures that evidence her being a riding minx and DIY god.

you're all perverts i tells ya!

D_S you could've found a pic without the engagement ring in it!

On my travels I've noticed that there is a higher percentage of female mtbers the further north I go... I don't think this is just in my mind.
Has anyone else noticed this?

LOL @ Druidh... what picture of you should I show her?

ha - ive experianced the trail phenomenon of men who just wont let women past when im riding with the mrs. unforntuantly for them mrs isnt really slower than me till we get to the technical stuff. she is very determined - but not in a winny races type of way just a "i want to be the best i can be" way.

Soz TSY - I was drawn completely to the quad/hamstring/lycra combo. didn't notice the engagement ring.

MTBing females are great because they are typically fit and fun loving and it shows they are game for getting wet and dirty and falling off and not giving a nob-chop about it.

only really been aware of the male passing (or not) thing once during a charity cycle, so there were a 100 cyclists from work, doing 300miles over 3 days.

we had really put the work in training wise so hill climbs were a doddle for me and my female pal, this large bloke obviously took offence at us chatting on our way past him. He started bombing past us on the downhill and when we attempted to overtake him again on the next up, he would check behind and move out to stop us. Made passing him even more fun!

i have to say he was a one off, most blokes ive met are very supportive.

I don't get people who actively dislike pink, or any other colour for that matter - it's a colour! unless you've been forced to wear a particularly horrible wooly pink jumper since the year dot and you now have associations of trauma with this there's no reason to 'hate' pink, surely..?

It wasn't only druidh that objected! 😛 White shorts on a bike should be banned, as should worn out lyrca shorts - nothing worse than sitting behind someone and being able to see a bit too much 😯
