Ton - that's pretty much what I thought; some kind of environmental sensor.

Don't know what it might be measuring though.

Ton, I'm liking your conviction here.

Any corroborating evidence?

There's nothing I like more than being able to come across a smart bastard so when someone points to one of these and asks what it is I want to be able to answer with smugness and authority.

Just tell them that it's a mapping device with "smugness and authority" anyway.......that should do it.

Don't ever let a lack of corroborating evidence stand in the way of smugness and authority. And the more absurd your claim, the better........just remember the smugness and authority.

It's a watsit you know thingymajig that thing that does you know it was on the telly the other day the bloke with the grey hair funny accent he was in that program you remember. Really though it's the thermostat for this summer. Environmental scientists hide them in a different place every year and the lucky finder gets to turn up the heat for summer. The last 2 years nobody has found it hence the crappy summers. Hope you turned it the right way?

Sturmey is correct - it's a TBM.

TBM - Temporary Bench Mark

A datum point for topographical surveying or setting-out.

Now I know it's a bench mark, if ever I find one, I'm going to move it 3 inches to the left. 😈

DON'T!

if you find the same one that I found last week you'll be putting it back where it was when I found it 😉
