Trying to find seriously cheap skis for occasional use in Scotland only. Bindings I could trek in would be better but i don't know if that's possible to do cheaply.
I'm getting sick of seeing all the pictures of my mates stood on top of hills in snow, and biking is pants at the moment.

winterhighland.info sometimes throws stuff up (I've bought a couple of bits of kit on there recently), ebay can be ok too. Decent touring (Alpine) bindings and boots are expensive though, and can be tricky to find 2nd hand. Tele and nordic kit can sometimes be picked up cheaper.

I wouldn't have a clue how to use telemarks but i can always learn. The trekking stuff looks really cool but ~£300 for bindings is waaaay too much!

Well, I have just been eyeing up some K2 skis in the pawn broker down the street, they are totally straight, probably from the 80's if not before! So pretty cheap!
I've done a fair bit of alpine skiing abroad, but absolutely no ski touring or any skiing in Scotland. It seems that it is going to stay that way unless I find some kit just about good enough to let me get up a hill and back down again and give it a try.
I also have a feeling that as soon as I buy anything, Scotland will see a thaw so rapid we'll be lighting the BBQ and drinking out of coconuts. Because of this and the fact that Scotland might not get a ski season for another few years I can't afford to buy stuff that will only get used a few times.
I wouldn't mind spending money on boots as I go away skiing (alpine) every year and they will last a while but it doesn't seem as if there is any overlap in the two types?

I've been considering selling a couple of pairs of skis that I have lying around. I've no idea what they are or how much they're worth, so I'm interested too. I'd like a snowboard around the 165cm length for a bit of kite-snowboarding and for playing about on but don't really fancy spending hundreds, maybe I can find a tradeoff on a snow forum.

I might still have my old 178cm K2 Four skis (pretty mint condition too) unless my mum has already taken them to the charity shop. And a pair of Lange X7 Boots in size 9 (ish), which I have at home gathering dust.
Not used either for at least 8-9 years now (boarding is much better ;o)

I have been keeping an eye out but I think I will just have to hire for the time being. When you add up the cost of boots, bindings, skis and skins it is alot for what will probably only be used a couple of days at most before the end of the season. I think I'm going to wait until I can afford to do it properly.
The technology is pretty interesting though, seems like there is a big change underway with the AT style bindings and boots with changeable soles etc. Just seems to need a few more years to settle down and it should be pretty easy. (Just like flying cars and jetpacks)
I do my touring in regular downhill boots - bit heavy granted! Also have some marker duke bindings which add to the weight... but it's all worthwhile when you get to go down in my opinion. But then I live in the alps and we get to go down for longer I suppose - for scotland I'd have thought some lightweight dynafit bindings and lightweight boots would be good - as you will be spending far longer going up than down..
don't forget that even a set of skins will set you back £100 or so on top of the skis + bindings + boots.. still, it's cheaper than mountain biking! and less maintenance!

I got a pair this winter (Kastle Skis and Salomon Evo8 boots) for £25 donation to mountain rescue....And now bought three pairs of early '90s skis with touring bindings on for £35 from ebay for colleagues.
I think lots of people bought shiny new kit this year...all the more secondhand stuff going 🙂
