Thought I’d have me a grandad drink tonight to get a good nights sleep.
The ovaltine has formed into an almost glass like super hard structure. Like a hockey puck.
What is this witchcraft?
It's past its use by date, which was sometime in 1954. Perhaps there's space in your ration book for a new jar? Maybe knock something up with powdered egg and camp coffee in the meantime?
Weird. Did it get wet at some stage?
No, and it’s affected two jars of it. I’m going to smash it with a toffee hammer for science purposes tomorrow.
Is there a "contact us" address on the label?
It's going to hatch... An ovaltinomorph. Nuke it from orbit to be sure.
This week I discovered some Horlicks turn to a caramel coloured puck like that.
Assumed it was due to the heat this summer.
I think Horlicks naturally absorbs moisture over time and goes hard.

Yes, it does. When I was a kid I used to buy packets of Horlicks tablet sweets from the shop nearby, which were basically just compressed powder.
Talking about them has now made me want some! I’ll have to see if any local shops have any pots of Horlicks, just to make a change from my nighttime mug of Belgian Chocolate drink.
Horlicks were selling tins of tablets for a while, but they’re sold out! Boo! 😒

They sell tubes of the tablets in B&M.
I was never a great fan of Ovaltine, Horlicks, Camp coffee, all stuff foisted on me by grandma along with Dr Whites Kompo or cod liver oil when I had a sniffle. She did make a great pie though.
Don't break it up. Give it 1/2 dozen coats of shellac and use it as a quirky ornament.
Few more coats once a year and a century from know they could be puzzling over it on antiques roadshow
