And, as a result I think of encroaching middle age, I really like the look of Porsche Cayennes. There may also be a bit of Panamera displacement in this...

If you're getting a Mk I, stick to the V6 or the Turbo - the stock V8 doesn't have the greatest longevity. Seriously flawed design.

I'd get the Turbo, but allow for huuuuuuuuuuge running costs. 14mpg is the least of your problems - servicing, tyres, insurance.....all are monstrous.

If he's buying a Porsche Cayenne, I don't think money's an issue for running it 😉

Rather than wasting money on some thing like a Porsche my aim is to waste money on some thing like the toy below, and then keep some thing like the old Mondeo for day to day use. A nice car for weekends, and a shed for day to day driving that I dont care if it gets dinted etc.

03 Audi A4 1.9 TDI (130BHP) MPG between 50 and 60 to work. Servicing between €100 and €150 for a standard service at local garage. Only had to replace the front and rear windscreen wiper motors since I bought the car 4 years ago. 116k on the clock and plan to keep it going for as long as it will go. It's way fast enough for me, can take a lot of bike stuff in the boot with seats folded down not to mention furniture etc, criticism would be the width of the boot as transporting some stuff diagonally in the boot is a pain in the hole.

Re: the Jeep.
It's a diesel, so 30mpg is about right. And as far as I'm aware, they're actually pretty solid as cars go. Certainly never heard of one having its floorpan torn off. Not much cause for that kind of offroading in Edinburgh, anyway, but the 4x4ness of it should help out getting to various parts of deepest darkest Scotland when the weather's too extreme for the Rex.

2 Ultimate dull wagons:
07 CMax 1.6TDCi and a 55 Mazda 6 Estate. I have almost monthly urges to buy something flash, but as the kids (not to mention my mtb habit) have pretty much destroyed the interiors of both cars, why bother, i'll just run them into the ground...both have about 80k on the clock, so should be good for another 3 or 4 years minimum.

'11 Golf 1.6 TDi bluemotion Match, it's a bit of a mouthful but I get 58mpg

Also have an '04 Honda Stream MPV which is the do it all van of the house. You can chuck a bike in the back without taking the wheels off. It doesn't do many miles now, we only get 34 mpg but it has never had anything replaced in 70k miles so that counts for a lot of petrol.

Currently have '59 BMW 118D company car (great to drive and 50+mpg, but too small for a family of 4)
wife has an 09 Skoda Fabia (brilliant build quality but crap on fuel as it is petrol)

The BMW is going back within the year, and will be repalced with either a Passat or Touran Bluemotion.

I'm keen on picking up a nice hilux twin-cab for camping/bike carrying duties but finances won't allow at the moment... ;o(

It's a lot of fun, only down side is the mpg which is around 10mpg when Im having "fun" so its a little on the thirsty side, proper weapon though.

Currently depressed with my car situation.

Only have a Alfa 156 Sportwagon.

This time last year before the move down south, I had the Alfa, Fiat 500, 1967 MG BGT, KTM 200EXC enduro bike and a go kart....miss a garage.

Only plus point is the Alfa will soon be replaced by a Navara as a bike hauler 🙂

I've got a Seat Leon Fr - petrol. Its a great car, really enjoy driving it. Usefully quick without being likely to get me into too much trouble and practical without being boring.

I'm also on the insurance of my brothers Evo VIII which I get to experience from time to time so long as I pay the not insubstantial fuel costs. Its frankly astonishing how quickly you can cover ground in the thing.

I'm glad its not mine though single digit MPG figure when you are pressing on and MPG in the teens when you aren't trying don't bear thinking about!

Company car: 2011 V/Hall Astra 1.7 TD SRI 5DR - IMO a very well made car. Don't like the handbrake system, doesn't always engage & once found myself chasing the car along the road. Ave 47mpg, but drive it hard. Main car to lug the bikes around, comes with tyre marks on the roof lining 😆

Shared car with the missus: 2001 Mk4 Golf GTi 3DR in black (2 litre 8 valve). Nabbed it as a trade in for cost 3 years ago & it's still worth more than what I paid for it then. Lots of extras including a gun turret & heated seats. Getting an ave 35mpg, and only 38K on the clock.

Daily drive is a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX FQ340. It gets used for hauling the bikes around also.

I keep resisting buying an ariel atom for weekend use as they are quite cheap nowadays.

A5 Sportback - surprisingly good when it comes to fitting the bikes in, certainly better than the coupe would be!
Still regret giving up my fireblade powered kit car, stupid amounts of fun to be had in that!

Friend has an Atom 3 300... tis an immense bit of kit, shame its got no handbrake and is so difficult to get MOT'd. Oh, and not great for the bike!

We have Sonnie and Natasha

Sonnie is a yellow Fiat 500 1.4 Sport. More smiles per mile than you can possibly imagine. We will probably trade up to an Abarth Essesse next.

Natasha is a red Alfa Romeo 147 2.0 Twin Spark Lusso. Why did I wait so long to get an Alfa? Loving her so much. And I think she is the only the second Alfa on the thread. Would love a Q4 Brera or Q4 159 Sportwagon.

We bought a Merc C270 cdi estate in the end, but sadly its now gone so actually looking for another car !
(great car 55mpg but had an electrical fault that kept reoccurring and refuse to spend anymore on it, sold on ebay with known problem)

sticking with Jap cars now (the boss has spoken)

A lot of money on this thread!

I've got an 03 mk4 Golf GT TDI 130 it's good. 106k on the clock, 50+ mpg.

Want to replace it with an A5 once we've bought a house! Can't bring myself to drive the Sportback as it looks rubbish, so it'll have to be the Coupe and struggle with bikes!

2004 Mk6 Transit T300 SWB Lowroof.
Having had a van I will never go back to a car. Vans are just so much better in every respect.
[EDIT] Except that van insurance policies never come with 'drive other cars' for some bizzare reason, other than that everything is better.
.
Would quite like an Integrale Evo3 as a fun car if I had the funds though.

My first was a 1.6 Proton Persona, paid £200 for it. At the time that was cheaper than a Hope C2 disc brake, which I had 4 of! Current van was cheaper than the frame of the current race bike.

Well i currently own a silver forged 420bhp mitsubishi evolution 8 which was completely impractical for my good lady to drive so I also bought a stock evolution 9 FQ360 to tootle down the shops in!!
Very reasonable 4500 service intervals with the silver one returning around 13mpg so I like to think im doing my bit for shell shareholders.....i jest of course!!
Asides the above they are amazing cars to drive!! This is my fourth having owned a 5, 6, the 8 and 9!!

The silver one is for sale if anyone is interested? 😀

Pepper, that's an awesome car 🙂

I own a 2010 vw scirocco 2.0 petrol fsi turbo
and a 2010 abarth 500 esseesse which has been tuned to 200 hp and 255 nm of torque.
I still get 40 mpg and it costs next to nothing to tax and insure.
Nippy as its only just over a ton in weight.

Touran TDi - looking to replace with van/kid/bike/canoe carrier. Its been pricey to run, but good car still, and feels good and 'tight' for a 110,000mile car...
Yaris D4D - bought of my dad, has 70k on clock and has never had anything other than tyres, service and windscreen wipers replaced until a few weeks ago - and that was a 2 hr job to change discs and pads. Ace car...And I don't treat it gently...

Stop paying your mortgage and find out.

Very unexciting cars here, 6yr old Festa and a 4yr old Bluemotion Golf

Really quite fancy and old Mini Cooper, don't have the time for a hobby car though
