As an SMax owner I would recommend an SMax. I haven't driven any other 7 seaters though.

Regarding economy my 1.8 tdci returns between 38 and 42 mpg. More on a run

Back seats not much good for anyone over 5'3".

Our next will be Galaxy if the in-laws still need to be ferried about. My kids are getting too big for the boot.

7 seats or luggage - Touran

7 seats and luggage - Sharan

Touran probably more economical out of the two

I have an S-Max and I'd buy another. I'm 6ft and can fit in the 3rd row of seats

Zafira Tourer, stacks in your budget as they're popular with the motability crowd. I have the 1.4T petrol and it's great, economy is ok for me (30 ish around town, mid 40's on a run). Huge boot, 7 seats when you need them, comfy & quiet.

Mazda 5, as long as passenger number 7 is a little un. Boot's not so large with all the seats up.

Renault grand scenic. Should be able to get a 4 year old decent one for that money. Mine was great, only sold as my son got a motability car. Fits a bike in whole, and can just about do 7 full sized adults.

Disco 3. ~ 9L/ 100 km. Brilliant car, great boot. Keep a bit for maintenance at 7.5k though.

More economical than my previous 520i. (or a ferrari)

As well as those suggested above, you could look at the previous version of the Peugeot 308SW. While they all could have the third row, you don’t always get it. Depending on the model, you get three separate seats in the middle row, which fold or remove completely, and the two rearmost are also removeable.

This. Driven loads over the last three years, and I agree with all of the above, picking a car up in Cornwall, with a 220 mile drive back home, you quickly find out which are the cars that are the comfy, easy to drive ones, and I very quickly got very fond of the Zaffie, the 1.4 turbo has quite a turn of speed as well.
I developed a deep dislike of Berlingos and Parners driving them the same distance, they’re horribly uncomfortable, unless you’re 5’4” tall with stumpy little legs.
C4 Grand Picasso and S-Max Grand are both fine cars, the Ford does have the added advantage of a heated screen as well.

Recommend what you've got....

Peugeot 5008 (2010-2017 model).
Loads of space, 1.6hdi has averaged 47mpg over 18 months of mixed driving (over 50mpg on motorway runs). Comfy to be in for long journeys.
Rear seats - I'm 6ft2 and can just fit in them but wouldn't want to be there for long with my head pressed against the roof!

I alos looked around a mitsubishi outlander (version pre PHEV). It was nice, but a bit 'functional' in places - partculary the rear seat mechanisms. Saying that though the center seats back and forward individually making some nice arrangements if needed.

Didn't test drive it though.

If you're considering them read up, there are so many versions and facelifts it was quite confusing. The guy at the Mitsu dealership was very helpful.
