Following on from the your first car / bike thread, what cars from your past do you still wish you could drive / have driven?

Daimler Majestic Major. My dad bought one during the 70s fuel crisis. A large Saloon and Limousine. 4.5 Litre V8 engine BHP 220 5,800 rpm, max torque 282 ft/lbs 2,700 rpm. Top speed 123 mph, 0 to 60 in 9.6 seconds.

[img] [/img]

Citroen CX in the 70s.
[img] [/img]

Citroen Dyane. We once got our Venture Scout 5 aside team and my dad home in one. Cured the body roll.

I'd like my 2CV. Fit some studded tyres it would probably go anywhere.

You need a vinyl roof to be like the Professionals don't you?

(Stops the reflection of your double chin apparently).

I briefly drove an old mini cooper 1275 well well before I passed my test. Would love to have a drive in one now.

Had a MK1 Capri 3000E manual for a few years, both fun & scary in equal measures + the fuel consumption was a bit frightening. Think I averaged about 15mpg in the time I owned it 😮

The 80's rally cars are an area I could collect if I had the money (shed loads of money)

Thread repoened.
In our various domiciles, neighbours all had these:
Sunbeam Tiger
[img] [/img]

Triumph Stag
[img] [/img]

Jensen Interceptor
[img] [/img]

My Dad's Maxi just wasn't the same... although my lovely Triumph 2000 was the nearest I could get to a Stag.

It would have to be a mk1 or mk2 Escort RS2000 for me.

Everyday I walked to school, I used to go past a black mk2 Escort RS2000 with the flat front and 4 square headlamps. It was a fantastic looking car 8)

Although I've got a soft spot for the Opal Manta as well 8)

I remember when I was younger, one of our neighbours had an Opel Manta Exclusive which I always lusted after.

Agree, no great driving experience although a great tourer (and as a young man in those days, it had the desired effect on young ladies 😯 )

Pretty bomb-proof motor, had mine for a couple of years - metallic purple with white roof and detail when I got it!! Resprayed it to its original red (similar to the one in the picture).

Now, the Porsch; went off them when a mate of mine took himself and two others out several years ago 🙁

Mk1 Escort Mexico. Loved seeing them blat round Breckland Forest in my youth and spent a lot of time in the sixth form daydreaming about doing the same thing in one.

I sometimes wonder why I got rid of my Mk2 Golf Gti. But the feeling doesn't last long. About the same length of time as wishing I had my Omega MV6 back in fact. Then I remind myself that fuel has almost doubled since I had both of those, and that they would make me a pauper in a month.

This is a car of dreams...
[IMG] [/IMG]
I had a 4 door 1600 sport with a tarted up motor that went like something that I'm not allowed to say but will leave it to your imagination off a greasy stick.
RS2000 Mk1, Mk2 or Mexico would be a hoot.
[img] [/img]
Muy sexy!

Came close to buying an S1 many years ago, but didn't. 😥

My dad used to rally (as in properly) a Mini Cooper back in the 60s. Wouldn't mind a bash at that.

And I know it sounds odd but he used to have a Fiat 132 as well.... And I have a weakness for old, crap, Italian cars. Becasue they have soul.
I once drove a 131 Mirafiori and I still have a soft spot for a 131 Supermirafiori Sport. Yes, they look like a Lada (IIRC Lada bought the design) and they've mostly rusted into the gound by now, but that engine.... ohhhhhhhhhhh.... You can trace its bloodline to this, a proper mans car. Love 'em:

[img] [/img]

Have some more 70s-90s Italian metal/rust that floats my boat:

Lancia Beta Volume X (Same engine: Fiat 2.0 TC. But Supercharged!)

[img] [/img]

Alfa Romeo SZ

[img] [/img]

Fiat 131 Supermirafiori Sport (Sorry)

[IMG] [/IMG]

Fiat X 1/9
[img] [/img]

And an Alfa 33 Permenant 4, Lancia Thema 8.32 (Ferrari V8!) Lancia Stratos..... etc etc.....

But one silly car I once saw in a dealers in Southend (They had it in for a while...) has always been top of the list. Italian again, I'd be impressed if anyone else has ever heard of it, let alone seen one...! A quick Google reveals only 300 were ever made between 86-93. Pig ugly? Yup. Countach v12 under the bonnet? Check! Love it.
🙂
Laydeez and gentlefolk, may I present the Lamborghini LM002 😯
[img] [/img]

OK already. Enough old crap Italian cars. My apologies. (But if I win the lottery, I'm having a garage FULL of them!)

DonSimon - that is beautiful!!!

I have always had a thing for performance Fords - the Escort RS2000s and Mexicos were great.

I eventually ended up with a MkII Fiesta XR2 until I put it on its roof.

Peter, Lada bought the licence for Fiat 124, not 131/132. Sorry.
I'd like a Fiat 127, 128, 131, 132, Trabant (with the real 600cc 2-stroke engine) and many others.

I worked, in a very minor capacity, on the Thrust SSC.

[img] [/img]

I saw the 714mph record but ran out of leave before the (still standing) 763.035mph record. The fastest I saw it run was about 730.

What do I win?

James May review on TG showed what a monster it was to drive mind, one of those things, better to keep as a dream, than acually drive I guess.

Yeah, I've sat in one - zero visibility and not overly comfortable, but I'd still like to own one as I'm a bit masochistic at times! The grin from driving/looking at it would out-do the difficulties.

I've seen and briefly considered one of these, but the combination of a fragile Maserati engine and Citroen complexity meant common sense prevailed. Pity.

"They had some association with Aston Martin, but without researching can't remember what."

They were a 2.8 special, like a 2.8i but with a limited slip diff, stiffer anti-roll bars and shocks. Tickford, who were Aston's coachbuilders and tuning shop took standard 2.8 specials, stuck a turbo in them to give 125 /155 / or 175 bhp, retrimmed the interior in full conolly hide, built a couple of extra consoles in, fitted a decent exhaust and tyres.

Many of them were fitted with that bloody awful bodykit, and front grille that caused the motor to overheat almost instantly. A very small percentage of them left Tickford without the body kit and just the mechanical and interior mods done. I own one of the latter un-bodykitted ones in black with the 175 turbo bhp kits and it's absolutely hilarious in the snow.

I had road going version which I lost during the 2007 Sheffield floods but would love to have a crack in one of the proper DTM versions.

Also love to have a go in one of the Cossack Mk2 Escort Rally Cars

One car from my past that I wish I could drive again? Without hesitation, it would be The Widowmaker:
[img] [/img]
Proper fly engine, innit?, but mildly understated outside apart from the impossibly trick 16" Volk TE37s with uber-rare dish in the rears.

Sadly, my lack of ability got the better of it, and it ended up down a ditch. Backwards, you ask? How did you know?

😥

I did drive it and steer (it's one man to drive and another to steer) in the early eighties. 32 turns lock to lock on the steering!

Don't really keep up with the MR2 kids now, but if you're on imoc/mr2oc then Jaffa and Larry93 are in Edinburgh and seem to keep their hand in with parts, engine swaps and the like. Give them a PM.

EDIT: I have the LSD gearbox and rear driveshafts from that very car if it helps?

When I was a kid and knew nothing about what makes a good car I used to think these were awesome, in a Thunderbirds type of way!...

...I now of course realise they were very wrong indeed! I still wouldn't mind having a drive in one though.
