I want to get out doing some natural trail riding in the lakes. Ive been looking at the Kentmere/Garburn Pass area. What I want to know is, what are the trails like around there. I know the garburn pass is fairly rocky/all weather but what about if I did Longsleddale as well. Is it likely to be boggy or is that reasonably all weather as well?
Anyone on with local knowledge please share it.

It's pretty soggy up here atm (North Lakes), I can't imagine Longsleddale would be a very good idea at all, its super boggy in my experience, I rode with a guy who got whiplash disapearing into a (fairly) innocent looking puddle up there last year.

Borrowdale Bash should be all good, nice and rocky, Grizedale Bridleways?

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll give longsleddale a miss then. Borrowdale is a bit too far to travel so im trying to keep it fairly south lakes. I did loughrigg last weekend, great little ride and fairly all weather.
Anyone got any other ideas for trails I could try please?

The trails on the west side of Kentmere are generally a lot more rocky than those on the east / over into Longsleddle. I wouldn't ride Longsleddle at the moment.

The trails around Tilberthwaite and Hodge close will be good, can be combined with Loughrigg if you want to lengthen it. Similarly most of the trails on Claife Heights will be ok, and the rockier trails in Grizdale, (although there will be a few boggy bits in Grizdale.)

All sound like good suggestions. I'll have a look in my guide book. Keep any further suggestions coming. Thanks

I'm hopefully heading up mid-dec so getting some good ideas for rides here.
Just need to find somewhere cheap to stay now. Any ideas? *minor hijack attempt*

Did Kentmere > Sadgill > Gatesgarth > Nan Bield at the weekend.

Ground not too bad but Gatesgarth descent a bit messed up, muddy and loose in patches where the surfacing either hadn't been finished or had washed away.

Grizedale was as excellent as ever though. Navigation a bit trickier there if you don't know your way round already of course.

I'm liking the look of the kentmere, sadgill nan bield etc. Might give that a try. Whats the climbing like, looks fairly steep is it going to be a bit of a hike around nan bield? Will it be ridable after all the rain today?

Nan Bield is hike-a-bike up on either side. Likewise cracking descent on either side 🙂

Gatesgarth Pass is rideable with thighs of steel and a heart of an ox. Nipping over Harter Fell is to be recomended. Bottom of Gatesgarth (on the south side) is massivly washed out, ditches you can fit a man in....

Bit further noth, but Ullswater is always a good low-level ride. Gets popular with walkers too though.
