I know there's bugger all in the way of hills round here but can anyone suggest some loops that don't involve a 30 minute drive to get there? Bibra / North lake? Beeliar wetlands?

Try the other direction. Manning Park. Short, steep climbs, technical rocky descents and sand.
A few ride there. Ask on the PMBC forum for a tour or just go and explore.

Ahh nice that's literally 5 mins cycle from my house. I rode from Spearwood into Freo yesterday, had a coffee at South beach and trundled back and saw all the parkland on the left of Spearwood Ave. Thanks will have a look over there.
