my maniac of a son (aged nearly 3) has been harassing me for days about getting him a water melon..
today I caved and we went out and chose one and brought it home..

The moment that I opened it and carved him off a slice he declared is 'sgustin' and wanted no further part in it.. good news for me as I'd forgotten how delicious they are and I'm now down to my last slice..

however..

Last time I ate watermelon must have been in the halcyon days of leisure where I could afford the time to spit out the seeds, not a luxury that I can indulge in any more, so I looked up some info regarding the nutritional value, digestability, etc

all good news.. if you chew 'em they're good for you (a bit fatty though) and if you swallow them whole they'll just pass through unharmed..
but did you know that the rind is edible too..? Not a popular choice here in the west.. but standard procedure elsewhere in the world and it's only a cucumber type skin I guess.. it tastes to me pleasantly of meadow grass..

so.. does anyone here eat the rind..? should I eat it too..? and if I do, will it give me superhero powers..?

I didn't know that...when eating honeydew melon as a kid, I was always told not to eat too close to the rind as it would give me 'bad guts'. Must be different for water melons. 🙂

In some parts of the world watermelon is everyday fruit until ... the farmers learned the goodness of pesticide and started spraying them in gallons and as a result the watermelons look bright red/pinkish/yellow ... the watermelons then absorb all the goodness from the pesticide and so they become very tasty ... 😯 ... as the story goes as I was told ...

Yes, you can eat the rind but it is not as tasty ...

Actually it's the other way round ... maggots are your friends when it comes to fruits and veg because if you find maggots in melons / veg it is an indication that it's "organic" or no pesticide or "cultivated" with less pesticide.

However if you eat melon once in a while with a little bit of pesticide in them our system should be able to cope according to those pesticide companies. So no harm.

Pesticides only really harm pests.
You're not a pest, are you?

If you have just eaten a whole water melon - respect. But that much fruit is going to do something to your guts!

I once consumed a full watermelon and a bottle of Havana Club at the same time, bad idea, the melon seemed to absorb the rum so I was quite a pleasant chap until I started digesting the melon and was hit by a massive wave of paralytic, speach slurring, debilitating drunkardness... Fun times...

it's 92% water..!! not a great deal different to eating a banana.. ( I left the skin in the end..)

Well the bananas from our supermarket are a bit smaller than the average watermelon - its a quantity of fruit thing!
