In glasgow today and saw the moonSwatches in real life for the first time. Really like the look of the earth model but can’t get past the snapped buttons and £200+ for a swatch. Went to the omega shop and my 9 yr old daughter wisely advised me that the speed master was £5700 and ‘what if the strap breaks, it’s not worth it, let’s go’. That was the first time I’ve been in a shop like that where I was being taken seriously but was brought back down to earth quickly 😄
Said daughter was quite keen on a shiny swatch though…
I quite like my Breitling Super Ocean. But yeah, defo get why folk think they’re a bit too busy….
Hopefully this link works…..
I am absolutely sure the quality is excellent though yes far too busy stuff going on face.
😛
This is a good looking piece. Are Yema well regarded?
Think it’s CountZero who’s still rocking a vintage one. Yeah, I think they are, (though not owned one myself) and getting better as they’re now making in house movements. I know that’s no guarantee of quality, but needs a level of sophistication above cases, dials and hands.
A bit late catching up with this thread, I’m afraid! Yema had a very good reputation for quality up until around the 80’s; they got involved with Seiko, who ended up swallowing the brand and just used it for rather tacky fashion-styled watches. More recently they bought themselves out of the Seiko situation and became an independent French brand again, but tough trading conditions led to them becoming part of the Swatch group, IIRC.
It’s allowed them to develop their own in-house calibres, and re-introduce modern versions of their classic watches, like the NavyGraf and the Superman diver.
And yes, I’m the proud owner of a 1970 Rallygraf Super, which has a Valjoux 7734 movement with three complications. The often mentioned ’Mario Andretti’ Rallygraf is the cheaper standard version with just two complications.
Mine broke its mainspring a few years back, finding someone who could fix a proper mechanical hand-wind watch isn’t easy, especially if you’re not keen on entrusting something with great personal and emotional value, but Deacon & Son in Marlborough came to the rescue, albeit at a cost - £465!
Still worth it, they’re fetching upwards of £4-5000 now. Cost me £50… 😎
This is mine, on the strap I made for it, using a deployment clasp from a commercial strap that started to fall apart.

Just to add, you need to be aware of possible iffy ones - I came across this one that had sold for £1500. The first thing that struck me is the fact that the hands are very definitely NOT original! Mine absolutely are, so it makes me wonder about other aspects of it.
Oh gosh, that ^^ might have to replace several of my current collection… perfect size and straps for me.
At least the move to the youth sizing forces them to lose a line of text - so that's something. 😉
Ha Ha - I remembered the comment from Jody's most recent Pelagos review about too much text - they've blanked out the clasp mechanism also which was another "moan and niggle" he mentioned.
@Fudd - I read a review of the Pelageos 39 earlier today, on Hodinkee, and if the money suddenly presented itself, I’d be beating a path to my nearest Tudor dealer with a deposit for one!
I just don't get it - it's a nice enough watch but nothing particularly interesting.
It seems Tudor can release just about anything and people fully lose their shit, if this was exactly the same but released by someone else it wouldn't get a second look.
Still, when it's released in "that blue" the plaudits for that will make the hyperbole for this seem like subtle understatement.
You make a good point. If you want a not eye wateringly expensive, recognised, well made COSC Swiss watch its a good call with great weight and dimensions.
But you can get a Sapphire 200m no date dive watch for much less of course. I had a chap ask about my two tone Geckota GMT last week (it look very sparkly in the Balearic sun) but he glazed over quickly. He was wearing a Submariner. Obviously not a real enthisiast. Lol...
Quite like the Tudor. I’ve got a BB so probably a bit too close in style to warrant buying it.
On a bit of a tangent, just finished watching Samaritan on Prime, any idea if the watch in the film is an Arnie? Looked like it, but didn’t quite see it enough to see for certain.
I just don’t get it – it’s a nice enough watch but nothing particularly interesting.
I'm with you Ivan. Flat dial, standard looking case, nothing particularly interesting in the bezel or strap design. Nice describes it perfectly. High quality no doubt, but... 🤷
I guess if we all liked the same thing, world would be a boring place though.
I just don’t get it – it’s a nice enough watch but nothing particularly interesting.
Totally agree. Nothing wrong with it but released without "Tudor" on the dial it'd be a complete non-event.
I’ve always quite liked the Pelagos, but I own a CW elite 1000 which is Titanium case and bracelet, COSC certified, 1000m water and cost me £900. Sure it’s not got the big player name but still a nice and functional good quality daily diver.
Received a rather nice grey/blue suede strap from Barton Bands for my Ginza Seiko. Nobody really rates the supplied bracelet, it looks pretty lush on this.

Love the dials on those. Looks great
@tthew, nice strap on that seiko. May have to go take a look at the barton site. Edit nice beer choice too
I’m sure it is lovely quality, but I’m missing what’s special about the Pelageos 39, thankfully as I need to sell one of my collection, to keep my one in, one out principles alive.
Don’t get me wrong it looks nice, but not the awesome I’d expect for 3.5k. It just looks like another nice conservatively designed dive watch. Suspect I’m not the target market either, having just blown my budget with a 1/2 price £170 fleiger purchase.
May have to go take a look at the barton site.
I really like them. Delivery can take a while from the US, (I only ever go standard shipping) and although they're not cheap there isn't a week that goes by that I don't get an offer by e-mail. 10% usually, but wait a bit and it'll either be 25% or 2 for 1. Sign up for their marketing before you buy. Customer service is good too, they sent a replacement strap once by fast shipping after a mistake and didn't want the wrong one back.
FYI, Barton have an Amazon Uk shop which takes about 28 days less for a strap to arrive.

Yes! Apparently they now have waitlists for the Ranger; they're really making the most of the "next best thing to a Rolex!" aspect

A while ago on this thread I'd mentioned that Rotary, yes off of Argos and Samuels etc, had some surprisingly nice looking models in the range and there was a Ranger style model released a few years ago which looked really good. I've had a bit of a look for one but with no joy but A Blog to Watch seemed to like it.

That's nice, but nearly £500 for a Rotary is a big ask...
I'm waiting impatiently for details and pricing on the Scurfa Top Side Crew....
Fondled a Ranger a couple of weeks back in Bordeaux. Nice enough but the numbers looked weird, and the lume colour on them didn’t quite match the hands. Unless it was my eyes. Looked great on the khaki NATO though.
The BB36 remains my “if you could only have one” watch. Right size for me, plus a Tudor should have snowflake hands 😉
12hr bezels should definitely be more of a thing.
that looks smart.
I'm n-1 s I've sold my zelos abyss. a really good watch that though, nuts, made me laugh a lot, but I just don't want so many watches...and want to be ready to strike if another grand seiko diver happens to come along.
That Pelagos is nice, but too similar to my Sub 14060M to go down that route.
A mate came round sporting the BB Pro... Magnificent watch and will take the plunge on one in the new year, Prob on the rubber strap.
Is there a market for Swatch watches these days? (I’m thinking unworn early 90’s models).

I was hoping there was although admittedly a few years ago now. I had some rare unworns and limited editions from the late 80's /early 90's. They sold on eBay for less than their original prices IIRC. Just had a look and Sex Tease GN136 (the only one I distinctly remember the name/number of was on Etsy for ~£80. My money would have been better just being left in the bank or at the very least being 'invested' in coke& hooker's
Orient M-Force diver ltd edition
I've got the black dialed version of this already but still tempted...
Edit: JFC, why doesn't posting images work any more?!
Was generally googling watches and found the below watch. The engineer in me loves the 'sliderule' design although not sure how intuitive it would be.

Checked the thread and it seems smart watches do get mentioned occassionally - just had a new Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra phone, so thought I'd update my smart watch to a Samsung Watch 5 Pro. Wanted a Fenix 7x, but that's twice the price and more and the Samsung ties in with my needs a bit better

That’s surely not a Samsung watch ? That looks quite classy, dare I suggest also much better looking than the Apple Watch.
I do like the ingenuity of the klok 01, not too sure on the yellow blob in the centre. you must get used to how the dial works, but not quite as easy to tell the time as a regular watch.

Specifying the case coulour and choosing a different strap helps over the standard affair

My old S3 doesn't look too bad for a smart watch I don't think though

Bremont Limited Edition Dambuster to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Lancaster Bomber first seeing service in 1942, and comes with Avro Lancaster Cufflinks incorporating aluminium from the original air frame of Lancaster B.VII NX611 ‘Just Jane’.
bartesque - like the Bremont limited edition.
@frankconway Thanks its a lovely piece with some lovely touches and a great back story to the brand, I met Nick one of the brothers who founded the company.
So I have a, now slightly aging, Chris Ward C6 Kingfisher. The original rubber strap is starting to crack and I want to replace it before it snaps and deposits the watch somewhere unpleasant. CW don't sell new C6 straps any more.
The original strap (and I don't know the correct terminology here) has wings that blend into the lugs of the case, and the end of the strap where the sprong bars go through is curved to match the bezel. Any ideas where I'll find something similar? I don't really want a strap that leaves the lugs exposed, as they're quite square edged, and I suspect a bit sharp.

Thanks!
Ello. I tried on the Pelagos 39 yesterday. The sunburst dial and bezel are strikingly so. No way I'd buy that. Size was nice though, diameter and especially thickness, but I'll stick to my full fat Pelagos blue 42!
My Geckota Sea Hunter arrived today and I’m ready quite impressed.
Edit: Shame I can’t seem to post photos
.

Thanks!
you're welcome. It's a lovely looking watch - I love the shape of the hands and the colour of the bezel
Thats a lovely' Gecko - an auto right? Which movement, the PT5000? I'm really liking mine, for which I stole the Nato idea from the chap a few pages back (apologies, but at least you now know how it looks before you buy one!)
https://www.flickr.com/photos/kryton1957/52374939588/in/dateposted-public/
The diver is an earlier Gen and I think Nobby your lume will be far better, mines a bit woeful but the GMT - a later model - is a big improvement.
I'm soon to be selling Tissot Supersport chrono TDF if any one wants it before the classifieds, with additional black/creme stitching barton strap.and original box. This one.
@Kryton57 Yeah, it's the PT5000.
It really does have the look & feel of something considerably more expensive & I've had positive comments from the guys at work (it's intended to be my 'office' witch). Even the chap who took a few links out commented so I'll take that as a positive!
I wasn't really looking for anything but I did have a bit of a clear out at the start of the pandemic and, well, you know.....
Wish I knew how to take a decent close up with an iPhone 13
Gaidong, phew! I am confident is be happy to stick with mine but somehow it's nice to hear others say the same
Bucherer had some Oris divers at half RRP last week (all gone now). Apparently John Lewis have dropped Oris and somehow bucherer got the stock. I'm slightly kicking myself for not jumping quick enough and getting a green or a be silver dialed aquis. If I'd had buyer's remorse I could have flipped it for a small profit probably! Idiot.

How come? Because the dial and bezel are a bit much?
I mean obviously if you already have a full-fat Pelagos it's probably more a case of how it compares to that rather than necessarily taking it on its own merits...

A quick Google suggests straps like that do exist; I'm guessing you'll need curved springbars* too, but none of it's particularly niche, you'd think?
*"sprong bars" is my new favourite phrase, gonna use it from now on 😀
@nobby sounds good. I always find my watches look a bit flat in photos - those two Gecko’s gold accents and crystal do catch the light very nicely IRL.
Btw, I find my i13 takes better pics when I wear my reading glasses…
The Seamaster and the Speedking (1952 model) are away for a service. Finally got round to sending the Speedking away for a service/new crown/new crystal.
The existing crown threads are worn - in fact non existant - and the existing crystal is cracked. So since the SMP300 Quartz wasnt behaving itself (starting and stopping but no battery low indicator present). Theyve went together.
Look forward to getting the Speedking back to see the improvements.
A quick Google suggests straps like that do exist;
They do, but for specific, and very popular cases, such as the SKX007 type. Because you've got to get the lug length, case diameter and in that case the notch size right, reasonable for a big seller, but not for the volume an old model Christopher Ward would shift.
You might drop lucky on a NOS one on eBay if you set up a search alert or that'd look good on a standard Sailcloth strap I reckon.
@nicko74, because it reduces contrast in a 'tool' watch and made the design language a little unintelligible. Real turn off, for me.
I've been loving my white seamaster and wearing it loads but the peli talk made me dig out my smurf version this morning. Love it. I do rather like all my watches.... So hard to choose one!
Hi all, I'm looking for a watch for my son. I've not really seen this combination of features so wondered if anyone could help.
Metal case probably analog (or nice digital)
More dress style Vs sporty bulky thing
Date
Alarm
Maybe back light
Maybe chronograph
Waterproof
Budget of 200 to maybe 400 for something if it's worth it
Does such a thing exist?
Think you're looking at a square G-Shock like this for all the features you describe. Anything less sporty/analogue likely won't have the alarm and backlight functions.

There will almost certainly be something chronograph style in the Edifice line that suits that brief.
But not a G-Shock not if you want "dress style"...
Ho about a Citizen Eco drive chronology (the AT): https://www.citizenwatch.co.uk/perpetual-chrono-a-t-cb5898-59e.html
Great watch, and they can be had for cheaper than that of you shop around.
Thanks, for the replies, certainly some good direction there. I'll take a look.
It's a reasonably mixed set of requirements and hence there being very few watches around which would meet them all - what's the thinking behind it, what's it actually for?
Any love for Isotope? Admittedly I like the Hydrium but they're dear for a "fun" watch.

I like them and the fact that they aren't afraid of going their own way looks-wise. Looking at that it's a bit small at 40mm but they also talk about the design of the buckle but don't actually show it and describe the crown as being designed in such a way as to minimise discomfort but it looks like a standard 3 o'clock placement so how far along the watch actually is to release is anybody's guess.
I thought they already did a run of that model in summer? I've seen em used on Crono24 going for a grand or so.
But not a G-Shock not if you want “dress style”…
Depends how dressy. Love my metal square if you're looking for digital

Even remotely dressy would rule that out!
Well I'd not wear the metal G with a dinner jacket granted, but my suggestion was biased on the features required rather than the look. As Ivan said, it's a big mix of requirements, dressy doesn't get backlighting and alarms.
Dinner jacket function this weekend, Bambino mk1 in steel, black dial - job done.
But how are you going to see it when the lights go down, time the after dinner speeches or know when to wake up for the port?
Hmm?
Hmm?
😁
I'll double wrist it with my Garmin on the other arm - proper classy like!
Depends how dressy
"Shiny" doesn't automatically equal "dressy"...
I'd go so far as to say if you want a "smartish" (slightly retro) digital watch go smaller and just get a Casio A168:

1/10th the price, arguably a smarter looking watch, still not the sexiest timepiece though.
By way of a comparison here it is alongside another square G and an edifice EFR-S108 (which I'd consider towards the dresser end of affordable Casio watches):

And just for the sake of it here's an ancient little eco-drive that I quite like wearing to work now and then:

Kryton's suggestion above is a good one, eco-drives that meet the requirements can be had for the stated budget, and most people will recognise a citizen as being a decent watch where a Casio will get a few more sneers (sadly).
“Shiny” doesn’t automatically equal “dressy”…
I wasn't suggesting it does, more the opposite - the G square isn't a dress watch by any stretch, but it is at home with a suit, smart shirt or even more casual with a modern/retro style to it.
I tried a smaller more classic style one and hated the look of it on my wrist, just too small - and I have small wrists
AD gave me warning yesterday of a 2nd Cartier price rise this year, around 5% in mid-October. I put down a deposit on a Tank Americaine for my wife's 50th, locking in current price and a 13% discount on top of that. Get your Santos orders in now! 😀
Just been successful on the Eddie Platts 2min dash. Will post up when "Commander" arrives.

If I was going to a posh do that, heaven forbid, meant I had to actually wear a D/J or similar, I’d still wear my Seiko SPORK, it’s far and away the closest thing I’ve got to a ‘dressy’ watch! Plus I don’t give a toss what some snobby git thinks about it.
#£&*#@!! I'm seriously tempted again. Another Seiko spring drive diver, not grand this time but may as well be. Seiko LX SNR041J1 Prospex Titanium Spring drive. I'd never have thought brown would be an appealing dial colour!
I'm having a serious look at my finances.... And still haven't sold the sbdc059/spb081j either... Parting with watches is hard even when it's too make space for another!
I'd want the 'Grand" for nearly 6 grand
That's a fair comment, the seiko supposedly compares favourably in a few ways. It's odd how much a brand is worth, were it a citizen Vs an Omega at similar prices I'd want the omega, but since GS is a relatively young brand and part of Seiko it's less of a difference.
I'm looking at used anyway, the seiko is a LE of 200 long sold out.
It’s handsome no doubt but for the money I wouldn’t want to see Prospex on it. I think they should steer clear of blurring the lines between Seiko and GS.
