It's my bloke's birthday tomorrow but I don't know what to get him. He likes shiny expensive things, but not bikes. He's previously suggested that he would like a winder for his automatic watch, but I have literally no idea where to even start looking for something like that.

Any of you watch-gurus got any suggestions?

Lol. No, this really is the kind of thing he buys.

Actually, I don't even know if he has a mechanical or an automatic watch. Why can't he just like bikes? It would be much easier 😀

I think that actually might just qualify as a Zeroth-world product.

A couple of top shelf mags and a box of Kleenex would be more fun - obviously he's got to be wearing the watch.

Cheaper too. And easier to buy on the commute home this evening!

No, but they're really designed for people who own a number of automatic watches and who swap them around regularly; it means that they maintain better accuracy, and the watch is always properly wound.
I swap between two watches, one for work, which is manual wind, and the rest of the time I wear an automatic, with a 55-hour reserve.
A winder is attached to the end of my arm for my purposes... 😉

Put four stout nails in a square of wood about six inches apart, get a a matchbox and two sturdy elastic bands. Thread one elastic band through the box and over the nails on one side and repeat for the other side. Ta-Da a watchwinder at a fraction of the proce and with the added personal touch.

I'll send my invoice directly

I've got a watch winder and never use it as it's too noisy to have in the bedroom.

I have an Oris automatic watch and dont wear it everyday so I put on a winder, works a treat and means you dont have to reset it if you wear it for a bit. Apparently its better if you dont have to manually wind them and pull out the crown etc to keep resetting them *this last bit may not be true.
They are a tad noisy though

I tend to wear the watch at work where I'm not so active so it often doesn't get auto wound enough and combined with taking it off to go riding / do DIY etc I often find it stopped. A silent beside winder would be perfect.

I can only hope the irony of requiring an electronic device to keep one's mechanical watch running sweetly is not lost on all the horologists with watch winders.

I got a cheap one off amazon. I have 2 autos, one day2day, other dress watch. My smart watch will go flat if I didnt have the winder.
Its a little noisy but have gotten used to it. I expect the expensive ones are a lot quieter

My parents bought me a self winding Omega for my 18th birthday but the vibrations from motorcycling wrecked it and after a couple of expensive repairs it ended up lost in a drawer.

Might be best establishing if he wears an automatic or a quartz first, however whilst I get the logic of a watch winder most autos have a c40hr power reserve which ought to be enough to overcome wearing a different watch for a day. I'd not use a winder as it's just 'wearing' my watch out more quickly especially if I don't wear it often.
