Have gone through a couple of (admittedly, used) washing machines in last couple of years at our holiday cottage. In replacing the machine again, I noticed the outlet hose smelled like possum butts. Not sure if that's just normal, especially for a machine that's only used once a month or so, or maybe indicative of needing a one-way return valve? Wondering as well if the limited use means sink water is draining into the machine, and causing problems?

All that is a prelude to - should I install a one-way/non-return valve of some sort for where the washing machine outlet connects to the sink drain? Or just create my own U-bend by routing the outlet hose above the sink drain and then back down? Or don't bother, and stop buying cheapo used washing machines with unknown histories?

Or leaving thr doors closed for weeks allowing things to grow in the drum
Just fit the u bend that comes with machine, this stops any syphoning
And run a hot wash through it monthly at 90 to keep it from going smelly, just dont wash your lycra at thr same time

Hot wash at 60 degrees should be enough with proper old school bio detergent or washing soda

That requires me buying a new machine that actually comes with this! Door is kept open when away, but will fashion some sort of U-bend, and do the occasional hot wash. Thanks!
