I liked it despite the presence of Cruise

To be honest, Ireally preferred the original, the recent re-creation is more about the spec effects..

's alright. Not brilliant, but alright.

Then again, I'm a huge fan of the Jeff Wayne version, if only for Richard Burton's voice.

I think the first half is tremendous, then it gets daft.

Not bad, bears some resemblance to the book. (about all you can ask from Hollywood)

Thought it was alright.

IMHO its a sci-fi movie so I expect special effects and, being a 'Hollywood blockbuster', I expect them to be good quality. I've seen the original but the special effects are obviously now dated so I don't find it as watchable and both follow the same basic plot.

Well the original survived having Leslie Nielsen in it so it wouldn't necessarily be a disaster.

I've read the book (about 40 years ago mind)

The original stars were Gene Barry & Ann Robinson. The film not the radio broadcast.

i thought the spcial effects were great, and the general look and style of the film, and the broken family storyline superimposed over the top is just about bearable until the stupid hollywood ending.

Has anyone seen the Jeff Wayne musical version? Its on at the o2 arena and looks great, tempted to get tickets!

I've read the book and it's superb. Skip the film and get back to the original medium; much, much better.

In the book the aliens land at the bottom of my road (Horsel Common, Woking). Was most disappointed when they didn't in the film
😕

Thought I had the book somewhere

The latest film follows the tripod theme unlike the 1953 version. However, special effects apart, the 53 version gets my vote.
