I've read these words
But still don't really get it. Presumably we are not talking about hiding Co2 emissions. So presumably they some held back particulates during testing? Did they really think they could get away with it?

There is another thread. They have software which detects via the various sensors when the car is being tested, this is easy as its run at constant revs for a period, it then changes the fuel mix/engine settings to produce less CO2 and thus pass the test. In real world deficit the car has different settings and produces more ("normal") levels of pollution. Note the manufacturers do the same for the fuel economy tests. Engine management these days is done via software.
