Bought myself a toy earlier this year…

… Hi all !

Always had a slight drip on the undertray nothing major and no noticeable difference on dip stick.
last week or so it seems to be progressively more, still not noticeable on dip stick.
took under tray off and put on ramps to have a good look. Turbo unit is dry, so guessing it’s not that at fault, oil is on the rubber pipes, towards the top - almost under big induction pipe. Obviously oil drips down and not up so it’s got to be coming from highest point - unless it’s spraying up, though not enough evidence to support that idea!
I’m no mechanic by any means however I do have a trusty guy that used for several years.
obviously without actually seeing, are certain pipes more likely to leak than others ? There’s also a black valve with a few small pipes coming off- not sure if this is an oil feed (doubt it).
My mechanic is booked for a few weeks, I like to go with knowledge.
turbo kicks in as it should without fail 😂
It’s had a decat and stage 1 - though this shouldn’t effect any oil issues.
any help or advice much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I can't offer any specific advice but have you had a look on https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/ ?

The petrol Volvo 5cylinders need their PCV system (positive crankcase ventilation) system cleaning at some point. Failure to do this pressurises the engine leading to oil leaks - usually from the cams and crank.

When depends on how often the oil is changed and how many miles. I did ours at ~150k

It doesn't necessarily sound like this is yours but it's worth checking - undo the oil filler cap when the engine is at temperature and idling & seal a rubber glove round the oil filler port. If it blows up like a balloon then replace the PCV system. Otherwise whatever is causing the oil leak will leak again a short time after being 'fixed' if the PCV is blocked.

Look on YouTube for Volvo crankcase vent etc.

Thanks for that information- I’ll try that afterwork tomorrow. Pcv valves diaphragms are available on eBay.

For argument’s sake if this was the cause then it won’t necessarily stop the leaks as I’d have already caused damage cams/cranks etc ???

Bloomin cars !!!

The full PCV system needs removing and cleaning/replacing - it's a small plastic air/liquid separator box and a few hoses. They can all clog up.
Need to take the inlet manifold off to get to it as it's buried underneath.

You still need to figure where your oil is leaking from - if it's generally from a rotating shaft (cam, crank etc) then it's likely it was the PCV that caused it to leak and just changing the seal will cause it to leak again in the near future unless the PCV is sorted.

Do the glove test first though - it might be something completely unrelated.

Hi again

I went and took it for a spin to warm up - did glove test and it sucked it in rather than blow it up ???

Is that normal ?

👍 that's good, PCV is fine. Just a regular oil leak somewhere.
