Getting overwhelmed by all the results from a Google search - can someone please recommend me some free video converting software (have a 720p mkv file that I'd like to convert to something smaller for better playback on a Samsung NC10 netbook or Nokia 5800 phone)...

how big is the original file, and what format do you want it in?
May be able to do it for you if it's not too big using OJOsoft total video convertor.

I use handbrake for all my dvd / video conversion. Its great, presets are obvious, does the job

Thanks Hants/iggs, Handbrake was also recommended by a housemate after I posted this so will give that a go.

vlc has a converter these days
also try virtualdub
