Our Boxer has just eaten 6 two inch sized tubs of play dough. The bright red one has already been puked back over the cream carpet...

Seriously is it dangerous stuff, or will she just have blue, yellow, purple etc poo's for the next few days?

Its not proper play dough, just a cheap Chinese copy that Grandma bought.

As far as I know play dough is edible (for humans) so dogs will be fine.

Composed of flour, water, salt, boric acid, and mineral oil, the product was first manufactured in Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S., as a wallpaper cleaner in the 1930s

IngredientsPlay-Doh's current manufacturer, Hasbro, reveals the compound is primarily a mixture of water, salt, and flour,[2] while its 2004 United States patent indicates it is composed of water, a starch-based binder, a retrogradation inhibitor, salt, lubricant, surfactant, preservative, hardener, humectant, fragrance, and color.[10] A petroleum additive gives the compound a smooth feel, and borax prevents mold from developing.[3]

Actually, as it has a very high salt content, it could be bad for Dogs ?

The exact ingredients of PLAY-DOH compound are proprietary, so we cannot share them with you. We can tell you that it is primarily a mixture of water, salt and flour. It does NOT contain peanuts, peanut oil, or any milk byproducts. It DOES contain wheat.
PLAY-DOH compound is not a food item and is not intended to be eaten.

PLAY-DOH compound is non-toxic, non-irritating & non-allergenic except as noted: Children who are allergic to wheat gluten may have an allergic reaction to this product.  Also, due to the high salt content in PLAY-DOH compound, the product can be harmful to pets if ingested.

There is no MSDS sheet required for PLAY-DOH compound.”

Has no one read this?

I'd imagine that it was fine and dandy, even though it's a Chinese knock off version. However, I'd have a look to see the ingredients (If there's any list on there!) to be certain.

Make a charity event of it. Divide your garden up into 1 mtr squares, and sell them. Wherever he drops his fisrt coloured turd wins. Double up if you predict the colour. I'll have 2 squares, and purple.

You think the ingredients will be totally different then ?

That's not the best way to "copy" something really is it.

So it will be full of lead and uranium with some added bleach no doubt.

Probably do no harm, plenty of water and keep an eye on him, it's dough with a bit colouring I can't see even a cheap version varying much. If it was bought from a legit source then it has to pass certain standards for kids to be let loose with it.

very salty probably..
it's other name is salt dough..

it's salty to put kids off eating it..

very salty indeed

incredibly salty.. in the 70s playdough was made by the women that worked at playgroups.. my old dear used to make it.. it's about 50% salt IIRC..

did I mention that it's very very salty..?

Next time it happens give your dog a dishwasher tablet (you'll have to poke it right down its throat)
Than send them out side ....it's almost instant vomiting .

I had this info from my vet as my spanial has a taste for socks

I'd be worried about that vet to be honest. Force feeding them a concentrated salt and chemical tablet? I'm fairly sure enforced vomiting isn't recommended for any animal?!

I'd also be worried about the dog too, salt has the same issues it does with humans - keep plenty of water about and hope it comes out fairly soon lol. Personally I'd be at least calling my vet.

The LD50 for sodium chloride in rat is 3g/kg. Say a boxer weighs 30 kilos, that's only 30g of salt ingested as a bolus dose (you can scale for species, but it's not a big correction).

Some interesting info here. Being sick was a good thing.

I'd weigh a tub, estimate the dose and watch for convulsions. I'm not a vet but I've seen plenty of toxicity reports!

Not worried about my vet at all ..he's my next door neighbour as well ...and my dog is bouncing around in front of me right as rain and we've had to do it numerous times .....obviously the dog doesn't have it in it's stomach for long

Two quick questions - how old is your boxer? And is he in good health, no heart/kidney problems?

If all's good should just pass out one way or another, but you've got to make sure it does so keep an eye out for 4 more bright colours over the next 72 hours! Feed as normal and make sure water is always available as he will be damn thirsty after all that salt.

If things stop coming through altogether/dog goes off food in next 72 hrs, then take to the vets, could be first signs of an intestinal blockage (which I have seen with a terrier who did similar).

Also, if the dog has previous kidney/heart probs take to the vets ASAP, the amount of salt in play doh can make these conditions acutely worse.

I have never seen actual salt toxicity from a regular play doh, only unfortunately in a dog that ate that salt dough stuff kids make Christmas decorations out of, so shouldn't be a problem on that score if the dog is otherwise well.

In the future, if your dog is prone to this type of thing, have some soda crystals to hand (NOT a dishwasher tab as some of these contain bleaching agents!) and pop 1/2 straight down the throat within 2 hours of consumption. You'll happily see the offending items again within minutes! If over 2 hours it's no use as will have gone out of stomach already.

Hope that helps 🙂

No, but I have common sense and can apply it unlike some qualified folk it seems. The vomit issue is a side one, it's the contents of the tablet that are/were the primary concern here. One of the primary contents of many dishwasher tablets is fairly concentrated sodium hydroxide. Ever spilled sodium hydroxide on the outside of yourself and seen how long it takes to burn through you? Not long I can tell you, and it doesn't go away with water either.

Just seems a bit dense and cavalier to go stuffing unknown household chemicals down a pets throat to counteract a salty non-poisonous kiddy toy unless there's no other option. And there are other options.

If you like I'll happily write to the RCVS and ask their official opinion of the technique and if they say it's the recommended solution I'll GLADLY post a retraction on here and eat my own hat at the same time.

I read about a guy who's Alsatian helped itself to a tub of artex that was about to be applied to his ceiling.

The dog was okay, but was caught short on the floor rather abruptly during the night. Said chap had to take a hammer and chisel to the resulting artex turd to shift it from the floor.

What about if your dog has swallowed a bouncy ball?

And no I'm not sticking a dishwasher tablet down his throat.

As I said in my earlier post -

DO NOT use dishwasher tabs!!!

Use soda crystals instead and just give one or two chunks, vomiting swiftly ensues. It's what us vets sometimes use/recommend before reaching for the apomorphine.

Only induce vomitting if the offending item has been eaten within the last 2hrs, otherwise it will possibly be in the intestines already. And definitely do not induce vomiting if the dog has eaten anything caustic, it could cause further oesophageal injury.

He vomited last night, it was stinking and battle began as he was fighting me for it. Growling at me when I put him out of the way while I cleaned it up. Couldn't see no evidence of it so going have to keep an eye on him the next couple of days. He seems Ok this am full of energy as normal.
