Still idly looking for a new-ish car. My criteria must be a marketing nightmare

However by eliminating the cars I don't like (which is most of them) I am slowly arriving at a list of cars I might like and the GTC is bubbling under.

So has anyone owned/driven one for more than an hour and if so what did you think about it

Ta folks

Are they still £20k for the basic one?! I've never driven one, but when I first saw them I thought they looked great, but not "twenty grand for a 3 door Astra" great.

Anyway, my Wife has got the previous model, it's okay to drive, okay on fuel, and in 7 years and 60k miles the only thing to fail was the steering rack (£500) and it occatioanlly drains the battery for no good reason. I drove it to Morzine and back and I didn't hate it. In short, it's okay, it's inoffensive but doesn't do anythign special.

Ok great it sounds like my kind of car

The list price does indeed start at £20k but the Vauxhall dealers are prepared to haggle (a lot). May explain the massive depreciation compared to Scirocco/Megane etc

It would have to be noticably cheaper than a Scirocco for me to chose one, but they don't really fit my personal taste - if I wanted a hatchback I'd get something more practical, if I wanted a £20k coupe, or even less I'd got for something that actually more than just a hatchback in a fancy dress like a GT86 which I adore - but everyone's got their own criterior and yours is quite narrow from your post.

Could be worth talking to a Toyota/Subaru dealer about a GT86/BRZ - there's a lightly refreshed version due out soon, so there could be deals to be had on any remaining stock of the current model. I've had mine for nearly 4 years now - has been 100% reliable, surprisingly economical, and is always a hoot to drive.

The current 2016 Astra is significantly different to the previous model, it's around 440lb lighter, for starters:

The last Astra was built on the same basic mechanical structure as the Zafira people-mover, so it was heavy, numb to drive, and not very fuel efficient — and Opel is well aware of those facts. Consequently, the new Astra shares its structure (called D2XX in General Motors-speak) with both the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze and the Volt. The structure is highly modular and, as a result, engineers were able to make the hatchback nearly two inches shorter than the last-gen model. Switching to the D2XX structure also helped Opel give the hatchback a much-improved 60/40 front/rear weight distribution while shaving a total of 440 pounds. That’s a lot of weight for a car that tips the scale at about 2,800 pounds.
