Harry the dog is wrecking my van seat. I've got a heavy duty cover on there, and he sits on it with a doggy seat belt harness thing clipped in.

Despite that, if I even dab the brakes, he can slip on the 'heavy duty' material. He also has chewed around the seat belt hole and generally made a right mess of it bless him.

Anyone got a good solution for a double van seat that maybe keeps them a little more contained on the seat, allows the use of a harness and allows another person to sit on the bench seat too?

Gratuitous dog photo

We put a doormat across the twin seat. Nice and grippy for the dog, reasonably comfy to sit on for the other person. Just stick it on top of the cover you have.

He has his moments 😂

Assuming you mean a fabric type doormat, not a coir one?

Yep, the rubber backed, fabric/towelling topped type. This kinda thing:

My dog doesn’t usually travel up front but the one time I had to take him shot gun in the van had the same slipping issues as you. I ended up putting his bed on the seat and he was much happier and settled.

Might not meet your still being able to sit next to him criteria though

Lash him into some sort of hammock hanging from the roof. He'll feel like Biggles. Maybe get him some giggles goggles.

😂

I think a bed type system might work ok-ish.

You can get these booster type boxes seemingly that hook into the seat.

Trouble is, he's getting to be a big bugger and also, it's a bit of a pain having something like that hanging about the van when I'm not doing doggy daycare. Not sure he'd stay in it when he's used to stretching out across the bench.

Maybe there's one that's more of a flat pad...? 🤔

If you had a rusty hateful POS Transit having a minging wet muddy dog on your passenger seat and generally destroying the interior would be the least of your worries eh Bert!

Well no, not really. Of course I could stick a doormat on there(and I've tried various things, not specifically doormats), but that can still slip off should I have to brake hard to avoid a cyclist running a red light for instance.

I was thinking there may be something someone uses that's a bit beyond what I've basically done already with various mats and rugs that integrates into the seat, or straps in somehow that he can't just fling on the floor when he starts digging about and being a bit restless like dogs can be. 😊👍

By flat pad, I meant like a pad dog bed. They tend to have a 'well' in the centre, not actual bucket sides as in the picture above, and presumably something grippy underneath.

Fair enough.

More serious answer, on the 'dog' seat of the twin bench seat we have a seat protector that's supposed to go under a child seat, this kind of thing (we picked one up in Aldi when they were doing them):

https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/17014499114?iid=142683345436

That does the job of protecting the seat back and can be attached with the buckle around the headrest and the seatbelt strapped across it. The door mat (rubber backed old TurtleMat thing) goes on top of that across both seats. It really doesn't shift, as the rubber on the mat grips the rubbery bits on the seat protector. Dog is then attached with lead on harness and other end wrapped around the headrest a few times and clipped back onto itself with a carabiner, giving him just enough slack to turn around and lie down, but not to stray very far or get off the seat.

You guys are all too nice, dog on floor

My wife used to have our dog on the seat in her Civic. In my car it was always in the boot. Now in the van he's on the floor. He can move around from in front of the passenger seat, between the front seats or in front of the back seats, doesn't go in the boot. But never on the seats, although I do have seat covers for general wet/muddy dogness, active lifestyle and three kids
