Due to a change in circumstances (we've somehow become a 2 van, 1 car household!) I might be selling on the bike van 🙁

The trouble is that is bought it for (roughly) £7,000 +vat from a main stealer (so I know the price is gonna be on the high side, but it was the right van for me) and now I'm likely to be selling it privately.

The liklihood is that the van will be bought off me for busines, do I basically kiss goodbye to £1,400 of VAT?

Hoping not, but hoping there's someone here with more experience than me on this stuff.

Cheers,

Mark

don't think so. see a few vans that are +vat for sale.

businesses pay vat and claim back anyway.

Nah I bought it purely for private use.

But I can't charge VAT and give a receipt to claim back, this is where I get confused. All the +VATs seem to be dealers

Are you VAT registered ?
Regardless I would put the van up for sale including the VAT you have paid.

I have sold my past vans for what they are worth
And also I have been asked have I added VAT as I was not VAT registered
at the time and my reply to that was The van is up for sale on what it is worth.

That's an option too 🙂

Actually, both are likely to go and we'll just get a big(ish), fast(ish) bike car instead. Annoyingly new (bigger) van isn't actually going to be as good for bikes as current (smaller) van

You cannot put VAT on your price if not registered.
You could however advertise it at higher price and hope to claw some of it back.
This is the joy of being a private buyer/seller losing a good wedge of cash!
Dealers charge VAT on some commercial sales, that money then goes to HMR&C.

Well this is how i see it?

Anyone who's vat registered has to pay vat on any commercial vehicle sale unless the vat has already been paid on that van. So a dealer wouldn't be able to sell legends van as plus vat as that has been paid on this van and that is only done once.

In your case advertise it as no vat to add. There are enough private people and small businesses etc that can't claim the vat back that it shouldn't be a problem.

Why is it likely that the van will be bought for business? Do a little research, it may be worth your while to get couple of windows bonded in the back, remove bulkhead and carpet the rear, stick a couple of lights in the back, market it to leisure users. (I say do your research, as depending on the van you could reduce the vans appeal/value to 90% of buyers if you get it wrong)

I bought a an through work (vat reg). And thinking of selling it. So would have to ask like £2500+vat. Not £2500. Cos I claimed back the vat when bought I have to charge it when sold

You would be better of selling to private user, as they will be more tempted by a no vat sale

But you are or react in assuming you potentially loose the £1400

What van is it ?

Vat free caddy shouldn't be hard to sell on at all. If it's got a decent spec it'll be fine as a private sale.

Tdi's are far better and sort after.

What reg, mileage and condition?
