Not interested in tales of 75mpg, it isn't gonna happen.

Is over 50mpg acheivable with a 26mile enthusiastically driven commute over dartmoor on A+B roads. I currently get 33-34mpg out of my mk3 petrol gti.

The Mother in Law has an EOS 2.0TDi. I struggle to get much more than 45mpg out of it......Driven, err, 'properly'.... 😉

Mk V 2.0 TDi I got about 49MPG

Mk IV 2.0 TDi I get about 56MPG with ease more if driven sensibly and driving like a loon when my Dad was knocking on deaths door I still got 49.6MPG

I tend to drive pretty quick too but smooth with it, fantastic MPG and lovely responsive engines.

Short answer - no, it's not. Not in any car. If you want to save fuel, you need to change your driving style.

You'll definitely get better figures than the GTI though, probably 25-35% less consumption.

The Gti gets up to 38 on an easy drive in, actually get more on faster runs as I can carry speed through sections.

It's a toss up between saving £50-70 a month in fuel but paying out to buy a newEr car or keeping my practicaaly worthless and tempermental gti running, I'd like to get it to 200k but the next 40k could be too much for it.

Really? Just picked my wife up from work which is 26 miles away and stopped off on the way back for some bit for daughters birthday tomorrow. 54MPG and as I say I don't drive slow.

Old 1.9 TDi 110 Passat.

48-50 for a fairly hard driven Peaks A-road + M-way journey,.

Easy 50+ for long motorway cruise - 60+ doable if you stay below 65.

48 fully loaded on the drive down to the Alps from London, sitting at 85/90 on the Autoroute + nailing it over a couple of passes for the hell of it. (did this journey a few times and always got the same mpg +/- 0.5mpg).

Mid/high 30s for heavy london traffic.

Not 'enthusiastically driven', no. You can go a hell of a long way towards keeping mpgs down without being a granny, if you know the tricks.

If you want to flog it your best bet is a blue motion style thing - that way you'll at least start off with high potential mpg.. so if you only get 60% you might hit your 50mpg mark 🙂

FWIW 2.0 TDI Passat 140bhp gets about 50mpg at 70mph on the M4.

Bear in mind for some people when they say 'slow' they mean keeping it under 85, and for some it means 60mph on the motorway.

2001 Fabia 1.9tdi estate (so old Polo engine), driven at 'around' the speed limit on last 2 long journeys have had 58mpg according to the computer, 57 according my my calcs. Computer says average of 51 over the last 3500 miles, around town, on motorways, country lanes etc.

Oh, I think if I drive @50 it'll do about 70mpg but life is too short.

recently Iv had a Astra diesel from work you can get 63MPG been seriously slow Iv managed it on my 60 mile commute (M40,M25,A3, back roads) but realistically (heavey right foot never wink going over 70) it gets 56MPG which aint bad.

Previously had a new ford mondeao whilst waiting for the astra and that did 46mpg

and the ford focus 1.6 D eco thingy 65mpg driving at 70 yes, when I drove normally/enthusiastically it was only getting 48MPG because of the little engine having to work so hard.

it was the only way to keep the emissions lower - you can get the MK V remapped and you'll be right as rain!

Fuel consumption isn't my primary concern but it all helps working out the numbers.

Average of 45mpg would save me about £60 a month at current prices.

1.9TDi Ibiza 130.

I get around 55mpg average on my commute which can easily go up to almost 60 if traffic is light or down to 52 if traffic is heavy. But that's pretty much sat at speed limit on A1 with a slower road start & finish.

Driven enthusiastically I can still get around about 50mpg out of it, but it depends what you deem enthusiastic, really.
Accelerating hard out of every corner, leaving braking 'til the last minute before braking hard & then accelerating hard out the other side & I suspect I'd struggle to get 45mpg.

Nope. Carrying as much speed as possible through every corner.

I get through a lot of tyres....

Anybody got any experience with the 170bhp version?

Am thinking of an A3 with that on board and was wondering what it would do & how it compares performancewise with my Mondeo 2.0tdci estate (gets approx 42-43mpg average).

For what it's worth, I had a 2005 Golf V 2.0 TDi, and thought it was fantastic. Quick enough to be interesting, but not so quick as to wind up in prison when the bizzies catch me. Handling was fun, but safe enough to keep me out of the infirmary.

40-44mpg if I was out for a thrash, and 50mpg if I drove normally. 60+ if I was driving Miss Daisy (only once did I achieve that).

yes Peugeot 206 1. 4 hdi cant really be driven enthusaistically though as it is a 1.4 at 60 mpg ish whatever the scenario.
Not fast though but frugal. Frankly can anyone drive fast on their commute these days? Cycling is faster for me over 15 miles so top speed/acceleration is irrelevant and it will cruise easily at 70

I just had my Octavia 2.0tdi remaped to 185BHP. I got 500 miles out of the last tank with a fairly heavy right foot, as I am still 'enjoying' the new power.

I make that 45.5 mpg

'07 Golf GT (140). Over the 4 months we've had it (bought with 79K on the clock) it's done 3500 miles and according to the computer has averaged just over 45mpg.
Most driving is short country lane trips with the odd longish motorway run thrown in for good measure.
Not driven slowly, but not a yoof either.

Honda Accord 2.2 CDTi - About 45mpg normally, when I've tried, I can get it over 50.
Audi A3 2.0 Tdi 150bhp - Easy to get 50mpg in that, just drive gently.

I drive a lot of hire cars and they're very consistant for my style of driving (fast), around 45mpg most of the time.

The best however was the pug 1.6 diesel 206 estate I've just had, amazing fuel economy and really quite quick. Let me work it out. I did 300 miles in it and but 26 quid in......

About 63mpg.

edit: Oh, and that's being driven enthusiastically on fast roads and motorways. Up to about 90mph.

Over 8000 miles in a 2.0TDi 140 Audi A3 we averaged 43mpg - that's a mix of a daily commute of 7 miles each way along country lanes and longer motorway/dual carriageway journeys.

Interestingly, an otherwise identical Audi A3 with a modern small petrol engine (1.4T - supposedly intended to balance performance and economy) has averaged 33mpg over 4000 miles of similar journeys by the same driver(s).

A3 5dr 2.0 TDi 170bhp here. The new common rail version if that makes any odds.

Average just over 40mpg.

I do a lot of town driving though

I've got 105 hp golf plus tdi. Consumption according to computer settles on 47-48mpg on my usual runs. Strangely was on holiday in Norfolk last week and got 55ish mpg when running around putting it down to freeflowing but slowish roads and denser air at lower altitude - lol!

If that is the case why worry about fuel consumption? You could probably save money as has already been said by moderating your driving. Try it at a more sedate speed and see how much longer it takes?

140, 2ltr Tdi Touran for me. Mid 40s on motorway at a "reasonable" speed. Hi 40s, nearer 50 when "cruising. Low 40s wife using for short commute. Coming up for 30k and only on 2nd set of front tyres. If you are eating tyres you are driving poorly and inneficiently. Sounds like your "carrying speed" is more like scrubbing speed.

Check/factor the cost of any diesel v petrol servicing when you are doing your sums

Seat Leon TDI PD 150BHP

10,000-ish mile average of 47mpg (since last service)
Long journeys, motorway speed, 50-56mpg quite easily
Short journeys (eg. 13 mile commute) 42-46mpg
Best ever 94.6MPG (from Gran Paradiso National Park to Aosta in Italy)

Very easy car to live with.

1.9TDi 130bhp '05 Ibiza FR, 37k miles, FSH

Usually have roof bars & carriers on* & it averages ~45mpg overall (town driving, A roads & motorways)

~50mpg if I take it relatively easy, ~40mpg if I'm having a bit of fun

* obviously I would get better economy without them, but one of my jobs means that I need to use them a few times a week, so on they stay.

Golf TDI 130 Mk4

I get 40 with a heavy right foot but the missus gets closer to 50. A roads n stuff it'll do 45 easily, best I've seen is 60 in the Alps.

No.

I drive a Passat TDI and used to live on Dartmoor. Carefully driven, with a warm engine, you'll probably get about 48mpg.

Set off from cold and boot it up all the hills and you can expect about 44.

Dave.

01 Passat pd100.
55mpg usually, up to 65mpg at best accelerating slowly up to around 60mph, using the overun fuel cut off facility wherever possible.
Never booted it over any distance, but I reckon high 30's maybe . It is 1.5ton after all.
By a Xsara with an XUD engine and run it on clean veg oil blended with derv if you want something you can thrash and not worry about thefuel costs
