Morning all,

I'm spending 2 weeks over Christmas in Thailand this year. My wife has rang the doctors and they are sending us a questionnaire to fill out....

I'm just trying to budget how much this is likely to cost? The docs couldn't tell us without us filling out the form each.

Neither of us have had travel vaccinations in the past.

Anyone able to give me a worse case scenario cost?

Cheers

You don't really need anything if you've had your normal UK jabs. You could choose to have something for the possible but unlikely diseases. I'd say it depends if you are going to beach resort or trekking in the jungle.

Thanks guys, we're staying in a beach resort all inclusive but will be elephant trekking etc etc.

Guess we'll need to fill out the questionnaires first

Oh one more questions.

Are any vaccinations mandatory?

I had a really good session with a decent GP (experienced traveler) before heading out to Indonesia (short notice) where we did the pros/cons of the main risks. Ended up with a couple of shots to cover the worst, skipped rabies (too close to be useful)

You need a yellow fever jab if you are passing through a yellow fever area. If you are flying direct (or going via transit airport only) then it's not needed, so highly unlikely that you'll need it.

Only Yellow fever in certain countries. Might be worth looking at the Ts & Cs of your travel insurance, small possibility they *might* not cover you for things you were advised to have had a jab for...

Hep B
Jap Encephalitis - possibly, recommended up here for locals who live in and around the jungle.

Worth thinking about getting the rabies jab, for peace of mind more than anything else. There are stray dogs everywhere, including Thailand.

We spent a month in Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam over last Christmas, and my husband was chased and bitten by a dog (totally unprovoked). The rest of the holiday was overshadowed by worry, and by needing to track down the 5 post-exposure vaccines that are needed on a very specific timeline after a bite.

Sorry, gloomy post, but for the sake of £120, I'd get the pre-exposure vaccinations.

On a positive note, enjoy Thailand 🙂

As far as I was told you still need to get the post exposure jabs if you have the Pre, you just have a little bit longer to do it.

You do indeed - but if you've had the pre-jabs, there's just 2 post-exposure jabs to have, rather than 5. And as you say, a larger timeframe.

Insignificant when compared to the cost of the rest of your holiday. That's the conclusion I always come to.

As for cost of jabs - rabies isn't cheap, jap encephalitis kills you, hep b makes you go yellow.

Google child with rabies - youtube - bloody horrifying.

Saying that, never had the vaccinations, just get the jabs when/if I get bit. twice now.

And there is no cure for Rabies, just a very slow and horrific death.
