I am tempted to install it on my tiny slow computer, are there any disadvantages to using it as a permament OS, provided it's stable and drivers are there?

I assume it'll stop working when they release the full thing.

Seems stable, been using it for a few weeks now. Dislike a few things but hey might just be me being technically incompetent.

If its an older machine then maybe do a little digging to make sure all the drivers are available for it. If you can get Windows 7 drivers, then windows 8 will be fine.

I tried it, and uninstalled it pretty quickly. The whole Metro thing I just dont get at the moment. I'd much rather just have the old classic style windows OS ( just updated to Windows 8 under the hood )

If the Windows 7 beta was anything to go by, the beta version will continue to run for a few months beyond the release date of OS itself to allow you time to swap over. It'll give you plenty of notice too I think.

I think the beta and the release candidate versions will be valid until January. If I were you I would hold off for a few days and go for the release candidate which is supposed to be out by the end of next week and will be a lot more stable and sprightly.

I've got it as a tester on one machine, but on the small machine it would have to be a complete upgrade, no room for a dual boot partition. So going back would be more difficult. Do all Win7 drivers work?

Is there a release date?

Recent preview / RC versions have needed a complete re-install at the end of the trial - it hasn't been possible to 'upgrade' to a licensed version.

May or may not be a problem for you.

Probably not. I don't mind doing re-installs so much.

I think I can do a complete system image of my current Win7 using backup, can't I? So if it's crap I can just pick up where I left off...?

If you have a big enough flash drive you could always experiment by booting from VHD. Not the sexiest option but it would alow you to keep your Win 7 install as is while trying out Win 8.

You mean booting from a usb device? I didn't think that feature was supported on the preview?

I've been using Win8 for months on a 5 year old lappy. Works fine.

Apart from the user interface being a complete and utter joke ?
