You sound horrified, should probably write to your local newspaper about it.

It would certainly get front page coverage in our local [s]pamphlet[/s] newspaper!

I kind of know what you mean - kids rattling a can to go on what is in effect a holiday doesn't feel right.If the trip has an altruistic angle its not so bad or if the kids are providing a service (car washing, bag packing etc) and are in effect earning the money for their trip rather than begging for it(or expecting parents to stump up) it would seem a positive thing.
