Now I'm sure it's not real, but I've seen some properly unlucky buggers in my life. From the start here we're not talking about people with cancer or people who were born in Spain, more people who go through life having small but seriously annoying things happen to them.

I've got mates who were always really lucky. They muddled through life like the rest of us (and complained accordingly) but then you look at them and think, 'christ, get a grip, you have more joy in a week than I have in a year'. These guys would always luck across the right girls who lets say had big knockers and loved giving head, or they'd get knocked off their bike by a millionaire who would buy their family a new car to keep them quiet (this actually happened to a chap I knew).... but unluckiness.

Someone who always gets dog shit on them. Someone who always has to turn back at the start of a ride, someone who gets cheated on 17 times in a year. That chap who just manages to be in the wrong pace at the right time, all the time.

Do you know people like this?

yes, i've known people like that.

but if you look a little closer you usually find that they're people with terrible 'situational awareness', i.e. they don't really pay attention to all the little things in life. consequently, they're viewed as being continuously 'unlucky', whereas actually they simply create their own misfortune through being inattentive, lacking empathy with others, or simply failing to make the effort to understand the world in which they live.

to paraphrase mr jefferson, "i find the harder i work at things, the luckier i get..."

I went through a phase in my mid teens where I was convinced there was some sort of cosmic conspiracy against me. i must have stood in Dog sh*t bout once a week, had beautiful girls cry on my shoulder telling me what a super listener I was once my mates had shagged her silly and then ignored her. I even had some disastrously wierd looking groundbreaking dental work done on me which saw me having a gum shield glued onto my top teeth at age 16. try pulling that look off for 9 weeks and getting a snog.
Thankfully things returned to normal by about 18 but I really had a strange mid teens as far a luck went....

Every junkie has a hard luck story but in the end they exercised choice at some point in their lives.

Shit happens to everyone but as above, some people seem to spend their lives wearing a big sign that says 'shit on me'.
